Description
Classic rock, Americana, jazz and soul: all throwback phrases to innovative and defining genres of music and the generations that embraced them. Uniting that tradition with literate pop-rock musings, trio band Goodbye Girl Friday (GGF) continues to carve out their own distinct music niche. Engaging lyrics and electric piano melodies depict a vision that recalls the past and merges it with the modern.
Front-man songwriter David Sherman drives the creative vision of the group. GGF's sound derives itself from a cornucopia of influences ranging from Mingus to Miles to Coldplay and Lucinda Williams and then back again to vintage-era Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney.
GGF began nearly a decade ago in Boston with Sherman and bassist Dan Grennes performing as the regionally renowned Edison With The Weather (EWTW). A year-long detour in Nashville brought their first release Pop Fictions as well as the attention and collaboration of many respected session players. Still in it's incipient stages and beckoned by the diverse New York City music scene, the band relocated in 1996.
Then newly reconfigured, EWTW spawned Off The Cuff with Sherman and Grennes accompanied by Shinya Miyamoto (drums), Ben Butler (guitar), and three background vocalists. Critical acclaim drew such reviews as, "this disc is fantastic! It's part fusion, part pop, part progressive rock, and a great listen." from Northeast Performer.
Sherman and Grennes sought the help of old friend and drummer Andy Sanesi after becoming dissatisfied with the direction and tone of the music at that time. Sanesi understood the dynamics and nuances of the music better than any of the band's previous drummers. The trio together (still as EWTW) recorded The Big Bang Theory with producer and engineer Prince E. Strickland (Adam Yauch, The The, De La Soul).
In 2002 Sherman, Grennes and Sanesi re-emerged as Goodbye Girl Friday. Their debut release,
Mr. and Mrs. garnered extensive critical acclaim as well as substantial airplay on more than 100 radio stations nationwide in different formats. Tracks from the album have been chosen for placement on respected compilations like Disc Makers, the Millennium New Music Conference, and New Future Records. The band also received invitations to perform in select showcases such as the Nashville New Music Conference, the Millennium Music Conference, and the Dewey Beach Festival. The disc features blues-edged tracks such as Big Red Bong sprinkled with urban jazz (Summer-Dusted Mind, Another Martini Please) and pop alternative (Mr. and Mrs., Once, Mr. Rainy Days).
Building on the momentum of Mr. and Mrs., GGF's newest release Silver or Gold, now available to the public, features Sherman's signature pop-rock style laced with an organic brew of country, eclectic blues and bittersweet soul. The CD features the production and guitar playing of Chris Tarrow (GrooveLily) and the mixing skills of Bryce Goggin (Spacehog, Phish, Pavement). The solid rhythm section of Grennes and Sanesi lay the foundation for Sherman's '62 Wurlitzer electric piano (think Billy Preston on Let it Be) and '50's Hammond Organ. Featured instruments such as pedal steel guitar (Cold Summer Rain, To Be Cool, Married Man), electric guitar and sitar (Better on Paper) clinch the moody but hopeful poignancy of the author. GGF will support Silver or Gold with their most ambitious touring and radio promotion schedule to date.

"Silver or Gold is a unique and varied album. With adult lyrics and hard to categorize sounds it provides a welcome relief from today's adolescent and marketing driven pop music."
Kevin Holtsberry, Blogcritics.org
"Silver or Gold stands as a testament to Sherman's maturation as a songwriter and the band's power to convey the song's melodic and emotional impact."
James Willcox, Starpolish.com
"Sherman's declamatory vocals add a precise note of affectlessness to his incisive lyrics about romantic dislocation."
Noel Murray, Performing Songwriter
"Goodbye Girl Friday is so skilled at piano-driven pop that it's worth popping open a bottle of champagne to celebrate them."
Tony Peyser, Santa Monica Mirror
