Description
singer/songwriter
"i have so much to say but i've been holding back... until now. rock candy is a rebirth for me. i've pulled together many pieces of my artistry in this album - rock, classical dance, sensuality, south asian spirit, my stories. "
her music has evolved.
shaheen's first full-length album, rock candy, co-produced with jay ruston, is a soundtrack to her personal journey (released april 2005).
sultry vocals, soulful lyrics and a sense of musical maturity. her signature pop-rock style is infused with subtle south indian classical threads and a touch of electronica. the blend of beats is experimental, it's edgy, it's playful at points. and she sings about real life experiences and emotions that will move you.
her music has mirrored her life in many ways.
inspired by her mother's melodic voice, her father's passion for south indian classical songs and her hometown cleveland's love for rock n' roll. shaheen began singing soon after she started talking, songwriting shortly followed, and at 21, she picked up an acoustic guitar.
influenced by her favorite artists, including the dave mathews band, stevie nicks, and peter gabriel, shaheen's early recordings were a fusion of folk and rock with pop appeal.
in january 2003, she released her first live album, entitled live from santosha, which showcases live performances from genghis cohen in los angeles. months later she hit the studio and recorded her first ep, in your love in august 2003. deeply personal, she sings about love, truth and compassion.
she played gigs and events throughout southern california to an ever-growing fan base. on stage, barefoot, strumming her guitar, she seduced audiences into her world with lyrical honesty and a charming down-to-earth persona.
her radio debut came in the summer of 2003 on san francisco's 93.7 fm after one of the station's deejays discovered her during a performance at artwallah, an international artists' festival in los angeles. more radio play followed.
the buzz was building. media and fans likened her to a young sheryl crow, sean colvin, and sade.
2004 was filled with career success and travel. shaheen was honored as the 2004 artist of the year by california state university, northridge's music industry studies program. her songs were placed in the independent film, the blessing, and she contributed her vocals to a bcbgmaxazria live compilation cd sold at the fashion label's retail outlets (track titled, "the color of bees").
also recognized as one of the "top coolest desis of 2004" by desiclub.com, in the company of other south asian "movers and shakers," such as filmmaker m. knight shyamalan (sixth sense, the sign).
an artist with some exciting milestones behind her, she began to plan for the recording of her first full-length album.
in october 2004, travels to london, paris, and amsterdam opened up a whole new world of music for shaheen.
"the european music scene is so inspiring. a global influence and melding of sounds that reflects connections to so many different cultures. american pop artistry has just recently started to explore that. i want to be a part of the musical revolution here."
a pivotal conversation in shaheen's artistic life was with a uk-based dj/producer named swami. after hearing her ep, he really challenged her to take a deeper look at herself and her music. was there a disconnect? why was she holding back so much of her desi self? was she taking the safe road by going down the "rock" path without even the slightest nod to her indian classical musical roots?
this chat over a casual dinner re-ignited something inside of her. and new ideas for rock candy emerged.
"with this project, i took much more creative control developing a fresh sound. i was hands-on with all aspects of the album - songwriting and vocals, playing a range of instruments, selecting and sampling sounds, programming, arranging, and producing. i feel very blessed to have had the chance to create rock candy. it has allowed me to grow tremendously as an artist and as a person."
enjoy a taste of rock candy for yourself...
