Description
The St. Lawrence University Sinners are an all women's a cappella group usually of about 13 women who love to sing and want to continue their passion in college. The Sinners were formed 50 years ago to go along with the Saints, the all male a cappella group. From that time the Sinners have been creating their own arrangements from the music they love. The Sinners have a unique way of making a new song. Each girl in the group will bring a few songs that they love and the whole group will listen to them. After everyone's song is heard a vote will take place to narrow down the long list. Taking the top five songs, another vote will take place to choose the top two or three. After the songs are chosen the girls will spend rehearsal time listening to the version of the song they like, then create their own arrangement using unique vowels and harmonies. Sometimes the girls will listen to another version of the song, for example if listening to an a cappella arrangement of the song, often the original arrangement will be listened to to bring in further harmonies or parts. Each girl is responsible for listening to the song on her own and in rehearsal to find her part and solidfy it. It is often easy to find the harmonies within a song, but the hard part is using new vowels. Common vowels used are "ooh" "aah" or even "mmm". Recently the Sinners have been exploring with using vowels such as, "mmmm baugh" "dem dem" "chem chem" "ba ba ba" "wahoo" or even "somma deh deh deh oh". It is hard to write these vowels down but they make amazing sounds within a completed song.
