Description
Singer/songwriter Johanna creates unforgettable music that explores the full range of human emotion. Her amazing voice draws people in; her songs bring them back for more. Her performances include headline sets at the Oregon Folklife Festival, the Breitenbush Rhythm Festival, the Corvallis Earth Faire, and Oregon State University.
Her CD, Stolen Grace, captures her performing her most popular original songs. The heartfelt music on the CD combines Johanna's soaring vocals with the polyrhythms of world-beat band Oyaya. The recordings cross boundaries of culture, gender, and generation.
Johanna, whose full name is Johanna Beekman, has been singing since she was a child in Corvallis, Oregon. By the time she graduated from high school, she had performed in musical theatre, a gospel choir, a vocal improv chorus, a multi-generational rock band, and several solo venues. She studied songwriting with Chris Williamson and Tret Fure and vocal improvisation with jazz singer Rhiannon.
Her music has been influenced by Ani Difranco, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Indigo Girls, Dido, Everything but the Girl, Olive, Billie Holiday, and traditional music from Africa and the Americas.
Johanna is available to perform as a solo artist or as part of a larger ensemble. She often performs with other musicians, from world-beat percussionists to DJs.
