Three-Time National Songwriting Contest Top 10
2004 Telluride Troubadour National Songwriting Finalist
2004, 2005 Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Competition
Jennifer Spector has been writing and performing her songs with her acoustic guitar for almost a decade. She primarily draws from her love of traditional folk music, with a hint of the smart sassiness of Jazz and a little rootsy Americana. She performed on the streets of 14 European Countries in 1996, a year after moving to the American Southwest. She now performs regularly venues all around the West.
She mixes her relaxed desert mentality with the quick, sharp inevitable wit of a woman coming of age in New Jersey. Her first full-length release Ahead of the Game ,on her own Bathtub Music label, showcases 10 of her finest songs.
The production on the CD is a clean and pure approach, letting you get drawn in to her stories of love, inspirations, friendships and human fallibilities, without getting bogged down with an over-produced sound. Some fun and surprising musical cameos are found here...from the xylophone on Humor, the violin on Size 13, banjo on Virginia, trumpet on Oversized and a piano finale on Slow & Steady.
If you are interested in songwriters in their truest form (like her favorites: Joni Mitchell or Ani Difranco) you will not be disappointed in this CD. Your comments are welcome and appreciated. Jennifer also welcomes suggestions on venues to perform at and welcomes the idea of a house concert in your town.
With her beautiful voice, singer/ songwriter Jennifer Spector is a pleasure to listen to. That her songs are also first-rate makes "Ahead of the Game" appropriately titled. The songs here are mellow, and Spector's acoustic guitar playing is augmented by diverse instrumentation including flute, oboe, banjo, trumpet and a terrific xylophone on "Humor." Lyrically, she turns nice philosophical phrases such as "A grain of salt goes a very long way in life's smorgasbord." This album is one "game" worth playing over and over again. Rating: A
