Description
"It's true, I don't have a tattoo," laughs John Barney, "But one of the 'Floor has one - does that count? We have graduate degrees as well but try not to mention it much - reeks of being uncool or inauthentic. How stupid is that. Uh sorry - I actually didn't drop out of school!"
Finding the right image may be a problem for the 11th Floor, but producing one of the year's finest compilations of multi-genre music hasn't been. Characterized by some of the sharpest lyrics around, "Best of Days" is swathed in a vibrant blanket of rock, pop and blues - with a twist of country for good measure. Rootsy guitar, piano and joyous vocal harmonies is the name of the game here. Songwriter/producer John Barney has teamed with vocalists Lew Kerns and Reina Sanchez to tell intriguing stories about the passage of time, small towns, life, love and, of course, "The Worst" bar in the world.
"I don't find writing about hating the world productive. As I've gotten older, I've found that reflection inspires me more than disaffection. But some things like organized religion are rife for a little cynicism. Check out 'Bible Blues.' Also, it's great fun to try and tell an interesting tale within the confines of a four minute song."
Based out of Long Beach, California, John's lyric style might be compared to his signature guitar playing - unpretentious, emotive, but oh so real. When coupled with the 'Floor's Lew Kern's rough but authentic voice and Reina Sanchez' polished studio vocals, the result is intriguing and always eminently listenable. Country singer Eric Barnes adds some background shine to a few songs as well.
John explains the variety of musical genres on his cd this way - "I simply like many styles of music. It's cool to have a pop love song like "Wrap Your Heart" precede a blues tune. Or to have a mini-country section - Check out "Wild Wind and "The Worst." It's kind of against conventional wisdom, but I don't care."
Finally, for guitar fans, John torches his guitar during the last three minutes of "Waiting for the Sun." Smiling, John says, "It was really a reward to myself. I wanted to sing on one song and let loose on the guitar. It'll be a great tune to jam on during live performances!"
