Feather River Singers Release First CD:
"Daughters of the Earth"
Feather River Singers is pleased to announce the release of their first CD, Daughters of the Earth, a collection of twelve original songs composed by members of the group. Feather River Singers is a Native Women's drum group dedicated to singing Native American music in native languages as well as English. We are of Cherokee, Choctaw, Blackfoot, and Comanche and other heritages. Beginning as a drumming class with the Indian Education Program of Marysville, California, our drum group has developed over a period of ten years. The initial instruction was received from Mike Davis and Lucky Preston, both members of the former Big Lake Singers.
Our new CD features "Stai Yu" a Sneak Up Dance song in Cherokee. The song celebrates the warrior and was composed by members of the group. "Mother Earth" by Pamela Ames is a song intended to honor the Creator. The group's first song writing effort, a Tiny Tot song called "Frybread" is sung to a modified "Peas Porridge Hot" tune. Barbara Warren has written many songs which appear on the CD, including "Having Fun" (Intertribal), and "The Old Ways" (Men's Fancy). The songs are in Cherokee or in English. Prentice Robinson, Cherokee linguist from Tulsa, Oklahoma, acted as language consultant for this project. Members of the group include Barbara Warren, Kathleen Shain, Gwen Cochran, Anna Eyre, LE Honeycutt, Seth Honeycutt and Pamela Ames.
Songs from the new CD have been featured on KZFR 90.1 FM "Native Voices" radio program hosted by DJ Anna Kastner.
