Florence Yoo is a singer/songwriter from Illinois. Her first CD was called, IN MY MIND I AM 5'9" and is also avaliable here at cdbaby.com! Florence started performing in school plays in grammar school and went on to play bass and guitar in high school. Her itinerant career led to stints performing at theatres including: The Asian American Theater, Eureka Theatre, and touring with The New Conservatory Children's Theatre, The Imagination Company and The City of Oakland's Clownmobile. [Though her first children's theatre tour was with Ms. Dawkins' Theater School in IL when she was in the sixth grade.]
She has also performed at various venues across the country including: Borders Books and Music in Braintree, MA, The Cutting Room, Wellesley College, New York University, Freight and Salvage, Columbia University, Sidewalk Cafe, JumpArts Women Series at The Pink Pony, Caroline's On Broadway, B3 Comedy Lounge, Gotham Comedy Club, Boston Comedy Club, Joe's Pub at the Public Theatre, Eating It's 50 in 50 at the Luna Lounge, Izzy Bar, CBGB's Gallery 313, Cobi's Place, Pete's Candy Store, 5 Spot Soul Food Supper Club, New College of California, La Pena, Freddie's Bar, Albatross Bar, AIR Gallery, Phoenix Gallery, Lower East Side Tenement Museum Theater, Korova Milk Bar, North 6, Galapagos, Blue Stockings Women's Book Store, Hersterical @the Rising, Hysteria @the Lion's Den, Parkside Lounge, Walker Space, The Neighborhood Playhouse, Present Company Theatoriam, Meow Mix, Chocolate Monkey, Eureka Joe, Barmacy, DUMBA, Slipper Room, Asian American Writer's Workshop, Vaudeville Utopia at Otto's Shrunken Head, Bowery Poetry Club, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Harvard, and the New York Public Library Theatre to name a few.
Yoo appeared and sang on the PBS television show, "ASIAN AMERICA" hosted by comedian, Esther Goodhart.
Florence had the good fortune to study at Judy Davis' voice studio in Oakland, CA, as well as earning a BFA with High Distinction from the California College of Arts and Crafts and an MA and an Outstanding Graduate Student Award from San Francisco State University.
The new CD, INDELIBLE was a labor of love recorded mostly at Dave Budrys [of Chuckleheads and Patty Elvis fame] fine studio in Evanston, IL, EARLY RECORDING. Additional recording was done at rawkin' percussionist/engineer Sue Hadjopoulos' NYC studio, (some of you may know Sue from her work with Cyndi Lauper, Joe Jackson, Enrique Iglesias, Simple Minds...) Andrew Wyatt's operation in Soho, and at John Mettam's studio, SerenityNow!
Florence is DEEPLY grateful for all of the talented musicians who are on the disc:
Dave Budrys - bass guitar, backing vox
Scott Carson - drums
Julia Cho - bass guitar, backing vox
Michele Coulson - drums
Laura Cromwell - drums
Jennifer Estaris - flute, backing vox
Sue Hadjopoulos - percussion
Alan Millman - lead guitar
Cristina Speligene - accordion
Florence Yoo - rhythm guitar, harmonica, Bustelo Coffee can percussion, vocals
The album contains talking, singing, melodic harmonies in the vein of '60s rock and roll with a millennial twist...

"There is something wrong with me and they can't figure out what it is."

BIG HUGE THANKS TO the gifted and prolific JULIA CHO

THE SPECTACLES OF DOOM at the La Jolla Playhouse in
sunny CA! More deets below...
Florence's review corner...
Theatre
CHILDREN'S LETTERS TO GOD
Yes, real children are in this cast! My first thought
was: are these really kids, or 40 year-old midgets?
Mainly because these performers were seasoned pros!
The set was beautiful. Very light on the God stuff,
good if you're not into that sort of thing, not so
good if you are looking for something spiritual.
DOGEATERS
Jessica Hagedorn's beautiful, dark, disturbing, intense,
hypersexual show about the Phillipines. I wouldn't
bring the kids. Rodney To's portrayal of
hustler/junkie, JOEY was poignant and memorable... I
have been a longtime fan of Rodney's -- now more than
ever!
'NIGHT MOTHER
Marsha Norman's evening of a woman with mother
issues... One of my favorite plays of all time...
When I read this play, I thought of it as the
daughter's story. The current production on Broadway
is all about Brenda Blethyn, Brenda Blethyn, Brenda
Blethyn... It's a truly remarkable performance.
BAY AND THE SPECTACLES OF DOOM
Julia Cho wrote this delightful children's play for
the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, CA. Somehow she
got some crazy idea into her head that I should write
some music for a few of the songs. I did. She and
the theater enlisted the directing talents of Robert
Castro. Robert and triple threat, Rodney To
CHOREOGRAPHED the last number for the staged reading
last week! It was so much fun!
The talented cast:
Amir Khastoo
Jeannine Marquie
Joseph T. Narducci
Rodney To*
Anne Tran
*Member of Actor's Equity Association, the Union of
Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United
States.
Many, many thanks to Julia and Robert, Rodney and the
cast for an amazing experience!
This play will tour in CA in 2005.
Look out for Julia Cho's new play, BFE that will
premiere at the Long Wharf Theater in CT, and will
also be presented Playwrights Horizons in NYC in 2005!
CONGRATULATIONS, JULIA!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy whatever y'all celebrate and God bless you and
yours and please, please, please come on by on Friday!
Love,
Florence

Here are the particulars from
*AWESOME* Kira Onodera:
"The Crease Question" is about an hour long, with a lovely opening act by my pal Florence Yoo. A very talented singer, songwriter, comic and all around cool Asian chic that rocks! My stuff is kind of sad and funny and all written and performed by me! A little help from Ali Costine and Luis Vega on my ranting and raving piece about working in the restaurant biz..Bring your friends, please. There is only one woman in this darn thing, I need to fill the seats.
From Florence: I've seen excerpts from the show -- it's HOT ! HOT! HOT! Beautifully written/performed and directed by the multi-talented ONODERA! Come on by, yo! Muchas gracias in advance, Amigas/Amigos!
