Description
Nowhere else will you find a singer/ songwriter with so powerful a voice and so striking a stage presence. She's been aross the ocean and back again, she tours the southeast. Only twenty years old, Tori Sparks has become widespread on the independent music circuit since January of 2002, more so after recording and co-producing her first EP, "Tidewaters," (February 2003). She has become an international presence on the airwaves, and audiences in France, England, and the United States have experienced her dynamic live show. In the past four years, Tori has written over one hundred original songs, in styles ranging from folk to rock to blues, to whatever else she feels like! Fans and critics are prone to say: "Well, you can't really pigeon-hole Tori -- but who cares, she ROCKS!" Her quirky lyrics betray a perspective beyond her years. Sparks cites her influences as: ". . . everything from U2 to Tom Waits to Joni Mitchell, to Janis Joplin and Lightening Hopkins . . ."
Tori started playing shows when she was seventeen, and has since attracted a diverse following. Currently a Tallahassee resident, she has satisfied local demand by appearing at many surrounding venues, including The Bradfordville Blues Club, the Deep, and Potbelly's. She has pleased the rest of her fan base by hitting the highway and gigging out of town. Where? "As far as my wheels can take me," she says with a wink. Favorite cities have included Miami, Orlando, and New Orleans. Tori has played alongside popular regional bands as well as national and international acts. Some of the latter include Charmaine Neville, Maria Muldaur, and Pat Ramsey and the Blues Disciples. She has recently begun a collaborative project with world-renowned jazz musician and composer, Longineu Parsons.
During the summer of 2002 the charismatic songstress was invited to Philadelphia to participate in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, where she wrote the original music underscoring Project DNA's production of "The Ghosts are in the Water." (The show was one of a select four reviewed by The Philadelphia Weekly.) In 2003 Tori was featured by the Florida Motion Picture and Television Association, and in 2004 was touted as a Featured Artist by the Songwriters' Association of America. She was proud to be a part of several benefit concerts, including the 2003 and 2004 October Songfest(s) to benefit the National Federation of the Blind and F.A.C.E., the 2004 Valentine's Day Festival in support of the March of Dimes, and the 4th Annual Deland Original Music Festival in support of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Her success can be attributed as much to her unique voice and playing style as to her high energy and wry stage banter - whether it's with a band, or just her and her guitar, Tori packs an undeniable punch. In the Spring of 2004 she performed and was interviewed in a taped segment for WFSU's "Outloud" TV program. Tori has appeared live as a featured artist on a number of radio stations, including Miami NPR affiliate 91.3FM, Clear Channel's 101.5FM and Triad Broadcasting's 99.9FM, WPRK 91.5 FM in Orlando and FSU's V89 "The Voice." Listen for her on these stations, as well as other independent stations from coast to coast. Tori can also be heard on 104.30 FM in (Leopoldsburg, Belgium),107.3 Heritage FM (Perth, Australia), and CKZP 102.7 FM (Saskatchewan, Canada), as well as on the Pendle Blues Radio and Radio Haven programs in the UK. Catch her online on twenty-four different digital distributors, including Napster, MusicMatch, and Apple's iTunes.
Sparks' Summer 2004 touring schedule included a run of enthusiastically-received performances in France and the United Kingdom, as well as an interview for "Blues in Britain" magazine. Last year, Tori announced her recording contract with Platinum Plus Universal, based in Nashville. She has been working closely with Hall of Fame Producer Robert Metzgar and RCA veteran Tony Migliore on her first full-length studio album, "Rivers + Roads." When asked for comment, Metzgar cited Tori as being: ". . . definitely one of the most promising artists I've seen in twenty years. This girl's got everything going for her and then some." This eagerly-awaited recording is newly available as of September 2004, and features a couple of completely overhauled 'classics' as well as newer material. Tori is currently being represented by Mr. Charles Fach Jr., former Executive Vice President of Mercury/ Polygram Records.
