Description
Rob Dorn presents his debut solo CD with sophistication and fun. An entertaining mix of songs, high in lyrical value are artfully arranged and produced. This recording not only showcases Rob's expressive tenor but some excellent Jazz musicians as well, giving the cd a wonderful creative vibe.
Rob Dorn has spent more than twenty years as a vocalist with a wide range of performing credits that span musical theater, concert performance, television, radio and recordings.
Rob's interest in classic American standards began at an early age. Drawn to Big Band and Swing music, he considers himself lucky that his career path has offered him many opportunities to perform this type of music.
Rob professional career began when he was still in his teens. Taking on a summer job as a singing telegram messenger, it was his idea to deliver one to Bette Midler who was in Chicago on a book signing tour ("A View From A Broad"). Popping out of the crowd, Dorn surprised the "Divine Miss M" with a parody of "Big Spender," belting out, "Hey Bette Midler... sign a little book for me!" Though the crowd and Bette herself met his performance with great enthusiasm, his singing telegram messenger days were cut short.
Rob made his musical theater debut in a college production of "Guys and Dolls." The experience of singing, "Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat" on stage with a full orchestra sealed his decision to pursue a career in music.
After graduating from Webster University in St. Louis with a B.F.A. in Musical Theater, Rob appeared in an award winning production of Stephen Sondheim's musical thriller, "Sweeney Todd" with Apple Tree Theater in Chicago. This led to an association with the Pegasus Players theater company and a string of other successful Sondheim stagings including, "Pacific Overtures," and "Anyone Can Whistle." Sondheim himself commissioned Pegasus to produce a national touring production of his "Into The Woods" in which Rob played the role of Jack (as in Beanstalk.)
After "Woods," Rob worked at Chicago's Court Theater ("Candide") and at the Repertory Theater of St. Louis ("The 1940's Radio Hour") with choreographer and future "Chicago" film director Rob Marshall.
In between theater gigs, he brought his talents to the thriving Chicago Cabaret community writing his own shows and collaborating with a variety of fellow artists. His cabaret performances included the musical comedy group, "Four Hits and a Miss," a Noel Coward evening and his own solo performances among others. He also participated in the AIDS benefit "Heartstrings" as a featured vocalist in a company that also featured Sandy Duncan and Jason Bateman. Rob also was the lead singer with the Alan Casey Swing Band.
It was in 1990 that he was first introduced to the show, "Forever Plaid" and found a happy niche singing tight four part harmony ala "The Hi-Lo's," bringing the "heart and soul" of the 40's and 50's to life onstage. After performing in the original Chicago staging of "Plaid" (Wisdom Bridge Theater) he went on to appear in several other productions of the show. Inspired by the tight harmony singing he performed night after night, Rob created his own musical group based on the vocal quartet, "The Merry Macs."
Teaming with, Randy Rineck, Joe Davidson (from "Forever Plaid" and Jody Briskey (who he had met while appearing on the PBS special, "Swinging Down Memory Lane," Dorn revamped "Four Hits and a Miss" and made it "THREE Hits and a Miss." (Just for the record, the "handle" actually came from a group from the 1930's called, "SIX Hits and a Miss" but who's counting?)
"Discovered" and taken under the wing of "Sandler and Young's" Belgian half, Tony Sandler, the group made their official debut at the History Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. Soon after, they toured with Sandler in concert and collaborated on the show, "A Fine Romance." After several performances in the US and in Belgium, the show was filmed as a television special on PBS.
One of the highlights of their work with Mr. Sandler was a special tribute concert to "Sandler and Young" at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert, California. With a sold out crowd that included Jack Jones and Keely Smith, the group was touted by the Desert Sun for their "amazing tight harmonies."
Eventually "Three Hits and a Miss" under Rob's continued artistic direction, embarked on their own national concert tours. From coast to coast, the quartet was celebrated for their authentic and expert WW2 era tight harmony. Their growing fan base included original big band enthusiasts and the new generation of swing music devotees.
Through the years, the group has evolved to include several musical artists and take on not only the songs of the 40's and the 50's but the 60' and 70's as well. They have performed in hundreds of venues throughout the country, on a world cruise aboard the Crystal Symphony and have had the prestigious opportunity to showcase their talents in the Kurt Veil recital hall at Carnegie Hall in New York.
In addition, their catalogue of CD's, which include, "Sentimental Star," "Mixing It Up," "Sing Sing Swing" and "Christmas Presence" have sold thousands of copies nationwide.
With the success of "Three Hits and a Miss" under his belt, Rob is now focusing full time as a solo vocal artist. His debut CD, "I'm Wishing" is in distribution via the Internet and is gaining the attention of fans throughout the United States.
Currently based in Chicago, Rob is busily at work on a new CD recording that is due to be released this summer.
