Carrier's Bayou Party 'Girls'
If you ever walked into Bethesda's Twist & Shout when Roy Carrier and the Night Rockers were pumping out the zydeco, then you know just what to expect from the band's new album "Nasty Girls." It's a raucous and relentless invitation to dance. No matter that the CD's sonics border on bootleg quality, recorded live, primarily at the Twist, the album's mix isn't muddy enough to conceal the band's propulsive thrust, much of which stems from the bellows of Carrier's accordion, or obscure guitarist Raymond Randall's flair for overlaying the beat with some sly and soulful blues licks.
True to form, the tunes are strictly boilerplate bayou, a routine mixture of party songs, boisterous chants, suggestive novelties and time-honored party favorites. The latter includes "I'm a Hog for You," which comes across as a twin tribute to, Carrier and the tune's author, the late zydeco king Clifton Chenier. The songs, however, are really incidental to the band's party mix. Infectious push-pull rhythms rule, a crashing confluence of rubboards, accordion, guitar, bass and drums. Indeed, at times the beat is persuasive enough to turn a social wallflower into a roadhouse exhibitionist.

ROY CARRIER and the NIGHT ROCKERS: NASTY GIRLS
Right On Rhythm - 1996
March 25, 2000
In his liner notes to this 1996 live CD, producer Wayne Kahn issues a disclaimer regarding the quality of the recording. Kahn states that; "it was recorded on equipment admittedly less than hi-tech, a little 6 to 2 mixer with a few microphones, a p/a feed and a tape deck. The sound may move around a bit, reflecting recordings at several venues and different set-ups, but the result is a true live mix."In actuality, the result is pure, raw, gutsy Roy Carrier at his best.
Roy Carrier and The Night Rockers are a performing phenomenon Live!. Nasty Girls, recorded live at three different venues, including the Twist & Shout in Washington, D.C. captures the energy that has cemented Roy Carrier and The Night Rocker's place in Zydeco history. The undisputed king of the Zydeco traditionalists, Roy Carrier has caught on tape some of the best live performances of zydeco blues ever recorded in a style and sound that's only enhanced by the lack of hi-tech equipment used by Wayne Kahn to record the sessions. With his first accordion notes, Roy Carrier strikes a match that quickly catches fire and engulfs his audience into a zydeco barn burner. You can sense the sweat pouring off Carrier as he unleashes his barrage of zydeco blues on the Northeast clubs that have secured his legend. Nasty Girls cooks with outrageous energy captured on such tracks as: "You Got Me Dancin';" "I Don't Know;" "Jump That Rope;" "She's In Love With The Zydeco;" and Clifton Chenier's "I'm A Hog For You."
On his opening track "He's The Man," Roy Carrier makes reference to the similarities between the styles of some of today's popular Zydeco artists. He lets his audience know that in a world of new age and funky zydeco, Roy Carrier stands out as one of the originators of the genre. In a career that has spanned decades, Roy Carrier has the credentials and the recording with Nasty girls to back up his claim that "He's The Man." Nasty Girls is a four-pepper performance that can be purchased directly from the record company at www.rightonrhythm.com.

Real Blues Magazine August/September 97
(Right On Rhythm) ROR002
We've declared Roy Carrier's band to be the best zydeco band in the world on several occasions, and while he may not be as familiar as C.J. Chenier, Beau Jocque, Buckwheat Zydeco or even his own son, Chubby Carrier, he can kick all their collective butts and then some, and this live' slab of smokin' zydeco is absolute proof. This disc will make you crazy! This is the ultimate in live' zydeco recorded at the club Twist and Shout, the Cat's Eye Pub and the New Haven Lounge, all in the Washington, D.C. area between June and September 1996. Producer Wayne Kahn keeps apologizing tor the less-than-hi-tech recording on this live' mix but he needn't worry about it - as he captured the true spirit of a raw, wild and totally authentic Louisiana bayou zydeco legend.
Roy Carrier formed the Night Rockers in 1961 at age fourteen, playing guitar at first while Chris Johnson played accordion. Around 1965 he took over on accordion after much advice and support from cousin Clifton Chenier, and the fun began. Roy opened a club in Lawtell, Louisiana called The Offshore Lounge, and it quickly became the Mecca of pure Zydeco fans, offering as many as six bands a night and non-stop dancing from 8pm 'til the wee hours of the morning. It wasn't until 1987 that Roy Carrier took his band on the road outside of Louisiana and they quickly became cult favorites in the Northeast from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts. I've heard perhaps two dozen top Zydeco bands, and the only one that comes close to the Night Rockers was Rockin' Dopsie's great band of the late 1970s.
But for 1997, there are none that would dare challenge this killer band made up of Roy on accordion/vocals, Raymond Randall on guitar (a legend himself), Troy Carrier on drums and accordion, Ronald Carrier on bass (thunderous bottom), Kevin Carrier on rubboard, and Kevin Broussard on rubboard. Having two rubboards going at one time makes for an infectious rhythm frenzy on the fast dance numbers. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why people will spend millions on weight loss plans and books/videos that don't work, when all they've got to do is dance to the zydeco, preferably 'live'. But, if you can't get a regular dose of' live' zydeco near by, then buy this CD and play it 'til your stereo melts or until you've lost 100 lbs., whichever comes first.
There's 70 minutes and 41 seconds of pure heaven on this disc, and right from the opening notes of "He's The Man ( Roy Carrier!)" you'll be up on the floor if you have a pulse. As Roy says, "Yeah, when I leave this place tonight zydeco gonna be stuck in the walls, baby. "That's if there were walls left! This band has got more dancin' grooves than James Brown, The Meters and Sly &The Family Stone combined! "Mama Told Papa," "You Got Me Dancin'," "Watch That Dog," "Mama's House," "Nasty Girl," "I Don't Know," "I Like It Like That," "Jump That Rope" and "I Want It Right Now" are all cardio-vascular workouts, while "Tired Of Living"' and ''Born With The Blues" are waltzes, while the last two cuts on this album are absolute 'insanity of a grinnin' ear-to-ear kind. You can hear audience members whoopin and hollerin? and believe me, you?ll be doin' some whoopin' of your own. 6 bottles for the hottest live' zydeco recording you'll ever hear. Tres, tres chaud mes amis. Hall of Fame stuff!
