Description
Tree Surgeons specialize in a unique brand of original acoustic music. Chief practitioners Glen Woodman (recorders, bass, voice, guitar, mandolin, uke and maracas) and Mark "Trail" Sylvester (guitar, voice, bass, flute, banjo and percussion) usually appear as an acoustic duo, using a wide assortment of instruments to create an unusual musical palette. Tree Surgeons also perform as a trio or quartet by calling on one or more of their talented drummers and percussionists.
Since 1997, Tree Surgeons have appeared at festivals, art galleries, clubs, cafes, bookstores and headlining performances from Massachusetts to Virginia, performing original music from their two CDs, Witness (2000) and Eye of Time (1998).
Glen Woodman
Voice, Recorders, Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Ukulele, Maracas
Glen's musical career began hesitantly at age six with the piano. He played the trumpet poorly at age ten, and took up the guitar and bass two years later. After eliciting blank stares and catcalls while simultaneously playing ukulele and sousaphone, he joined the orchestra at Virginia Tech as a tuba player and later, in northern California, began his concentrated study of the recorder. As a performance artist and environmental engineer, Glen played the title role in a seven-minute version of Shakespeare's Macbeth, played ukulele while walking a tightrope, and operated a 65-foot socket wrench in a nuclear reactor.
Mark "Trail" Sylvester
Voice, Guitar, Bass, Flutes, Banjo, Percussion
Mark grew up in Gaithersburg, MD where he was often seen with his guitar, most notably as a founding member of the band Spot. Mark attended Penn State, and after graduation he continued to live in State College, PA for several years. During that time he performed as a solo guitarist, taught guitar, bass and banjo, and played percussion for the African dance troupe, Nommo. In addition to playing with Tree Surgeons, Mark regularly performs in and around the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD areas, highlighting music from American Gypsy, his CD of original solo guitar instrumentals.
