Review by: Doug Floyd
The second EP by this Los Angeles based band finds the former duo of Scott Warren and Scott Schoen joined by guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Mon Agranat and bassist Duane Rakestraw; the boundaries of their previous work have now been blasted wide open and the results are stunning. Their first release "Home" was a mini gem, seven tracks of pensive ballads and minimalist country pop that paved the path for greater things.
Now the greater things have arrived!
BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris has already hailed this band (I got there first tho' Bob!) and has been playing tracks from this set for some time now, so imagine my joy when it arrived on the door step...eagerly anticipated this is another gem of a disc and well worth the wait. When I reviewed that debut release last year my singular criticism was that they didn't go the extra yard to put out an album, they were ready then...and they're even more ready now, so that criticism still stands, but other than that this is perfect! Based on this addition to their catalogue that debut album is well overdue and when it arrives, it will be an absolute stunner! In fact I have combined both the EPs onto one tape for the car, and it stands up as the best albums never made this year!
Opener "On and Off" is pure magic, and has every bit of potential to be a big hit given some timely exposure. A gentle major/minor chord progression with a melody interwoven and a harmony hook that is to die for. This is a track that has pummelled friends and family for weeks, to nothing but good notices. Worth its weight in gold - in fact brilliant. "Alright" - a nostalgiac trip into the world of 70's rock 'n' roll music and lifestyle is a rip roaring ride full of brilliant guitar work and wild bass and drums. Choppy, pulled and stunbted chords play over an adrenailine rush of rhythm which would feed the coals in the coldest depths of any 'at heart' rocker.
"wish i grew up in the seventies
free love, rock n roll meant something"
The bass pummels away to the rock steady drumming and one of the best vocal performances I've heard for a long time-an awesome track.
"A Fall from the Sky" takes us down several gears from the break neck chops of "Alright" into a sublimely gentle and beautiful minimalist ballad. Somewhat reminiscent of Ryan Adams' superior work with Whiskeytown, its subtle keyboard work brings colour to the otherwise stripped performance where the acoustic guitar and vocals blend seamlessly. The four track set closes with "Gun" a perfection of pop rock with lyrics that are particularly poignant at this time:
"and try though she may
she just can't ignore the little flags
lining the graves of so many fallen men
as far as the stars he is waiting for the bitter end
hoping to fall with his brothers close at hand"
Powerful and eloquent, the quintessential performance all round.
This is quite honestly a perfectly moulded set of songs and it'd be rare to find four such distinctive pieces of work on any full length album, here they showcase the band perfectly. There is something for everyone from ballads to hard and pop rock, all sprinkled with a liberal seasoning of tasteful melodic flavour. Signal Hill Transmission are undoubtadly the most promising band I have heard in years and I sincerely recommend this set to everyone who loves good music. They have it all! production is spot on, great songs and arrangements are settled to note perfect-ness. The addition of the new members of the band has added depth and the potential to rock the world is now there in spades. I haven't stopped playing this from day one, and I think you'll find the same.
Essential!
