Description
As far as where I have been doesn't seem as important to where I am headed. So I don't want to get into too much of the past for the simple fact that "Real Life" is the music I have always wanted to make. Coming to the realization that you have to do what comes naturally and have to do it for yourself is a very liberating place to be. The creative process is so much more fluid while being grounded. I guess that's what the meaning of clear vision is. Nevertheless, to understand the future is to visit the past.
All of the tunes on this CD where written after my move from Dallas to Los Angeles in November of 1998. Some if not all of the material has (In my opinion) an undeniable Texas sound. But I can't discount the effect Los Angeles has had. It has made me dig a little deeper and work a whole lot harder.
It was never my intention to have a certain sound, but growing up in Texas has had a huge impact on how I write, play, and just plain live my life. Listening to the music that my parents loved and what was playing in the background had more of an effect than I realized at the time. While learning to play rock and metal guitar as a teenager, I always had feeling that I was missing out on something deeper. Then I went to The University of North Texas. It was there that I discovered Jimi Hendrix. He gave me the want to discover more about the guitar and opened my mind to the idea of not setting limits. In addition to Hendrix - just being a part one of the most amazing music programs in the world is enough to inspire even the laziest of sorts ;-).
Someone told me, "This is all so guitar focused for you". True! but that is what it means having the guitar as your first instrument and living in Texas (at least for me). I found out very quickly that if you are going to sit in on a blues jam or with a local / regional artist you had better do your homework. There are a lot of really amazing guitarists walking the streets in The Lone Star State so I knew I had to really get it together. That fact gives me so much pride in where I come from. There could have been no better proving ground for me.
As for songwriting, that has always been a real love but has always taken a backseat to being a player. It has been in the last 4 years that I have seen the bigger picture. I finally understand that the guitar is the vehicle to drive home my musical point. Now "what about the voice you might say". Singing for me was born out of pure frustration in dealing with other vocalists. I have never fancied myself as a singer but soon realized that in order to make the music I hear in my head I had to overcome my fear. Thank God I did! everyday my voice seems to be more in tune with what I am writing, and now I can't imagine it not being part of my life.
This all leads back to my Debut CD. Which for me encompasses all the musicians I have played with, my family, friends, and just trying to understand myself and the world around me. This website is an amazing opportunity for me to share with you my experience so far. I hope you dig it!
