Kathy Smock has come a long way from the town in Indiana where she grew up. And the journey has been much more than taking the road from there to Chicago, and on to New York, and now to Austin. Along the way Kathy put in her time and paid her dues. In Chicago at only 18 her world opened up to the power and magic of rhythm and blues, and for the first time she awoke to her own potential in that city of music.
She moved on to New York, maneuvered her way into a job at the Blue Note just to be around the stage when musicians from Dizzy Gillespie to Bobby Blue Bland cast their spells on the stage. All the while she was learning and working, dedicating herself to write better songs, to become accomplished on the guitar. And always there was that voice, rich and strong and so uniquely hers that landed her gigs at The Bitter End, Visiones, and Don Hill's. All the while her music was changing, no longer a way for Kathy to, as she puts it, "get out of my sorrow," but slowly evolving as a way for her to reach out, to "bring a little peace to someone without peace, soothe those who hurt." Then she adds, with a smile, "And sometimes it feels good just to belt one out!"
