eMotion Review by Jonathan Widran
"Fans of pop-jazz super group Kilauea have been licking their lips over the long anticipated release of Greg Vail's opening solo statement E-Motion, and the charismatic multi-saxman does everything musically possible to fulfill their fantasies.
Infusing the same type of frenetic energy and silky passion as in his live and recorded performances with the band, Vail keeps his ideas melodically simple while venturing into enough edgy improvisational territory that will keep obvious comparisons at bay.
While punchy gems like the title track will have ears salivating coast to coast, and the Smokey Robinson cover "Just To See Her" finds a safe familiarity, the real standouts are the smoking blues-brass gun "Ben-Jamin" and the swaying orchestral centerpiece "In The Beginning." These two spin all emotions into unexpected directions.
Peter White and Carl Verheyen add some impressive string work, helping Vail establish his own voice on what could have been just another impressive pop jam session"

Saxman Greg Vail
raging actionstunningly richcharismatictotally engaging
Whether blowing a tenderly passionate soprano sax, firing up his exciting and playful alto, or edging into a more aggressive stance with his brilliant technique on tenor sax, Greg Vail is a show stopper nonpareil, and one of the most dynamic saxophone players on todays instrumental scene.
-Jonathan Widran (National Jazz Author)
Seldom a day goes by that Greg Vails saxophone is not heard on radio or television. Over the course of the last 20 years, Vail has recorded on literally hundreds of Smooth Jazz and Christian CDs. Recent jazz credits include Peter Whites smash hit Perfect Moment (#1 Billboard and #1 on Radio) and Grammy nominated, keyboardist Rob Mullins 3 most recent CDs. Television credits include all woodwinds in the award-winning, NBC series Profilers, numerous commercials, cable television Jazz specials and a national commercial for Time Life Records aired to promote the million-selling Sax By Candlelight and Sax By Moonlight CDs featuring Greg Vail. He has also recorded over 200 songs for Muzak, which are heard everyday, everywhere.
Touring with some of the hottest names in Jazz, Vail has performed with Rick Braun, Peter White, Keiko Matsui, Guitar & Saxes (with Richard Elliot), Rob Mullins, Slim Man, Craig Chaquico, Dave Koz, Marc Antoine, Diane Schuur, Eric Marienthal, and Brian Bromberg to name a few. In the Christian Music scene, he has recorded with the likes of Petra, Jon Gibson, Crystal Lewis, John Elefante, Leon Patillo, Morris Chapman and on numerous Maranatha, Vineyard and Saddleback Church projects. In the Pop world, Vail has played with Smokey Robinson, Al Stewart, The Coasters, The Drifters, The Platters, Slash, Billy Idol, Brian Wilson and Andrew Dice Clay.
Inspired by his grandfather, who was a professional saxophonist, Vail first picked up the horn at age six, studying privately while playing in school bands, junior high through high school. Beginning music studies at Orange Coast College while only 15, Vails formal training in music continued through his graduation from Long Beach State, where he received his B.A. in Music in 1984.
After graduation, Vail worked his way up the ranks of local bands until joining Smooth Jazz super group Kilauea when it first formed in 1991. Over the next 4 years Vail recorded on 4 CDs with Kilauea which prepared the way for his debut solo CD, eMotion, released in 1995 on BrainChild Records. He left Kilauea to form his own band that same year, simultaneously landing a deal to record Sax By Candlelight, a 40-song collection of love songs on Time Life Records released in 1996, which was repackaged and released as Sax By Moonlight in 1997 as a 4 CD box set.
Busy touring with guitar sensation Peter White and keyboardist Rob Mullins, Vail did not release another solo CD until December 2000, when his own record label, Greg Vail Music received the financing to record and release Christmas, The Hymns. Recorded and manufactured in a mere 3 weeks, Christmas, The Hymns put Greg Vail Music on the map. Recording began January 2001 for a compilation of favorite Gospel melodies; The Gospel Truth was released May 2001 on Greg Vail Music. With the purchase of the eMotion CD rights, Vail then remastered and repackaged his debut CD, eMotion, and re-released this Smooth Jazz gem in January 2002.
With numerous websites online, significant credits in every area of the music business and 3 solo CD releases in 14 months, Greg Vail has reestablished his presence as one of the most prolific musicians on the Instrumental Jazz scene today.
