Description
Dan Vaillancourt is a young and upcoming artist with a passion for what he does. This passion is easily seen in his music and in concerts. Dan is what those close to him call a music minimalist. One look into his bedroom can confirm this: You see a bed and a few clothes and his guitars, drums, amps, pa, boxes of CDs, posters, stickers and other random musical items. Dan comments on how his room is simply a place to sleep and keep his equipment when he's not out performing. Sleep seems to sometimes be a rarity while traveling to over 100 shows a year. Dan leads the life and has the passion of a true musical visionary.
"I not only want people to hear my music, but I want them to feel my music," says Dan
Growing up Dan listened to an ever-expanding list of styles, from folk, blues and rock to a broader range of jazz, classical, reggae, funk, and hip-hop. He began to intertwine styles to create his own unique sound.
"I try to incorporate as many elements as I can to set my music apart from everyone else's," says Dan.
You can see this intertwining of styles in his debut album, titled simply: Dan Vaillancourt.
Dan wrote his first song at the age of 14, and by the time he finished high school he had composed well over 200 songs. He needed an outlet other than his current band to start playing his growing amount of original material, so he branched out and began performing solo acoustic shows. He started out playing in coffee shops, bars, festivals and wherever else he could play. . He continues to wow audiences with his unique guitar style and soulful lyrics.
Dan began to record his first solo album, in late November of 1999. After 9 months of hard work in the studio, his debut was released in August 2000. The self-titled disc contains 12 original songs featuring a variety of musical techniques and instruments.
Dan plays much of his own accompaniment, and performs all of the vocals and backing vocals.
Some of the instruments that he plays on the album include: acoustic 12 & 6 string guitars, electric guitar, 5 string electric bass, acoustic bass, dobro, lapsteel, djembe and other percussion.
Some of the guest musicians add flavor to the album with mandolin, saxophone, harp, cello and baritone guitar, just to name a few.
The album is a soulful musical journey to his funkier side and then back again to his acoustic roots.
"I am the music and the music is me, my music lives. I pour my soul out every time that I play," explains Dan.
Whether it's a solo acoustic show or performing with a band, it is apparent that his music is alive.
