"When one is speaking Lakota, one is speaking from his/her heart," composer, David Little Elk said. Feelings from the heart are exactly what the sounds from his latest CD, "Elkdreamer II", express to the listener in most of his songs. There's a sensual tenderness that comes from his music and especially the songs that are paired up with Samia.--From a Review of this ELKDREAMER II CD published in the August 13-19, 2001 edition of the Lakota Journal, by Dottie Potter.
David Little Elk is a Lakota from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. He composes music that promotes the Lakota ways which develop complete health: physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.
David has been playing guitar since he was eight years old. At nine years of age, he began his classical training on other instruments such as various brass, wind, stringed instruments, piano, among others. David has been writing songs since then, and he records them in his own recording studio. He also plays all the instruments on his recordings.
In 1994, David released his first recording project titled "MALAKOTA/Wana Wahi", which when translated from the Lakota text means "I am Lakota. I have arrived." This release is available on cassette format only at this time.
In 2000, David released two music projects. One project is titled "ELKDREAMER: David Little Elk". The other project is titled "David Little Elk: WANA WAHI". All songs on ELKDREAMER: David Little Elk, are composed by David. All songs on David Little Elk: WANA WAHI are composed by David Little Elk, except for three songs. All music on both projects is produced, arranged, recorded, and mixed by David. And as stated previously, David performs all instruments on all of his recordings.
In 2001, David released a music project called "ELKDREAMER II: David Little Elk & Samia", which features his new singer named Samia. This CD features the use of the Lakota Language in nearly every song, as David is a Certified Lakota Language & Culture Teacher. The first verse and chorus are sung in Lakota, and the second verse and chorus are the english translations. Thus, nearly every song is like a Lakota Language lesson. David has chosen to compose his music in this manner because the Lakota Language & Culture are dying out and the Lakota Elders who are fluent speakers are beginning to leave this world. Thus, this is David's contribution to the preservaton of the Lakota Language & Culture.
Since most people are familiar with the topic of love and intimacy, David has chosen to write his lyrics on it using both the Lakota and english languages. He also plays all the instruments on this ELKDREAMER II project, and he produced, arranged, recorded, and mixed it by himself.
As stated previously, David is also a Certified Lakota Language & Culture Instructor. Thus, he has also written a book titled "WICOH'AN OTEHIKE", which means "the difficult road". This book is about Lakota Culture and many of the teachings in this book are the same lessons which he presents to his students. This book also contains Lakota Star Knowledge stories.
David has also written another book which is a course on the Lakota Language. Each lesson also has an accompanying CD to help you learn to pronounce the Lakota Language correctly.
David believes that Communication is the transfer of medicine (energy) through our thoughts, feelings, actions, and words. The Lakota Natural Law of Generosity states that the medicine (energy) we use to communicate with others will return to us fourfold. When a person tries to hurt someone else, that person is only hurting him/her-self more because the energy he/she sent will return to him/her fourfold. And when a person does something healthy to others, that healthy medicine (energy) returns to him/her fourfold, too. This is the foundation of the belief that, "The Honor of One is the Honor of All." Therefore, it is Lakota tradition to communicate in a most clear and effective manner with each other. In this spirit, David composes his music.
Music is also communication. Those who have been blessed with this gift to compose music are entrusted to compose music which is uplifting, comforting, encouraging, and healing; thus, promoting active living and encouraging inner harmony. This inner harmony is then reflected by Nature to the world around the self. This brings one into harmony with the outer universe, reinforcing the Lakota concept of Mitakuye Oyas'in: "we are all related".
