Description
A word about Martian Acres. This is the songwriting and production team of Bob Story and Dennis Wanebo of Boulder, Colorado.
A brief word about ourselves: Bob and I started collaborating after he had recorded and produced a CD for my band (The Oldest Garage Band) at his Boulder studio early in 2002. Great CD, by the way.
Anyway, shortly afterwards, we started doing a Rogers and Hammerstein thing. (We're exactly like Rogers and Hammerstein, except that we haven't sold a musical note or a lyrical word yet!!!). As you may know, Hammerstein used to just drop newly-written music off onto Rogers' piano and walk out of the room. Then Rogers would write the lyrics. "His music was so good," Rogers was fond of saying, "that the words just wrote themselves."
Well, Bob Story's music is that good. The words write themselves.
The music we are writing and recording does not fit neatly into any niche. Neatly hell, it can't even be crammed into any musical niche. If we do say so ourselves, the only thing which all these songs have in common is their strong vocal melody lines and the liberal use of harmonies.
But the musical styles themselves? Purely "non-crammable."
There are country tunes (from an evening at a chickenwire-type bar to a love paeon for a homely and non-talkative cowboy), but it ain't a country album. There are several hard rock tunes (including a Hendrixy-type piece which finds a paranoid sitting in his house contemplating the shadows that are moving across his lawn (is someone coming for him?). But it's not a rock album. You'll find blues as well; and you'll find jazz. You'll hear some musical lines which will remind you of something you might have heard on the White Album once.
There is a wedding song which crosses bluegrass, country, and perhaps a bit of jugband as well. Guaranteed to make you want to get married.
Hell there's even a SHOWTUNE! Guaranteed to make you rich. Can't miss, huh?
