Description
Syracuse New Times - Record Hop By:Nathan Turk
"This debut album molds ballsy post-punk and the Toadies' post-grunge into a kick- ass, post-something. Merit's influences often get into fistfights, but singer/guitarist Brenna Merritt has the lithe voice to make it work, evoking the Butchies' Kaia Wilson, a coherent Courtney Love and Karen Crisis."
The roots of Merit lay in the friendship forged by four college friends who crossed paths at Syracuse University. The group was formed in 2002 after Wil Mecum and Jeff Nelson left a college
band and started work with a local singer songwriter in Brenna Merritt. Hal Appleby's rock vision was the final piece of Merit.
After finishing collegiate work at SU, Merit continues to call Syracuse, New York home. Their continuous practicing schedule and committed touring of local music venues has helped them hone their powerful live act, propelling them to open for several national acts. Their first demo, recorded in May 2003 found it's way to a Syracuse rock station, where it not only received airplay, but also commanded them an hour-long interview and acoustic performance.
Members of the Syracuse music community started to take notice of the strength of Merit. The local radio support garnered the attention of Aux Records, a newly formed indie label in Central New York. With the help of Aux Records, Merit recorded its first full length studio album, When We Fight, which was released in April 2004. Less than two months later Merit received the Brian Bourke Award for Best New Artist at the Syracuse Area Music Awards. When We Fight has received airplay from several college and commercial radio stations in upstate New York from Rochester to Albany. "Man on a String" was added to rotation at WKRL in Syracuse and broke into their top ten the week of August 21, 2004. The band will soon begin touring the country in hopes of showing everyone the honor of Merit.
