Description
"The first time I heard Mikel's stuff, I was very intrigued... Doing his own writing, recording, and production, I think you'll be amazed" -Wally Witkowski WGOW Radio
Hailing from Knoxville, TN, Mikel's original brand of simple acoustic guitar, lyrical intelligence, and a slightly-Southern soul-enriched vocal delivery is a refreshing change from the formulaic computer generated sound of most music today.
Mikel has been showcased on WGOW-Chattanooga as a new artist featurette and will be appearing on WZUP-Maryville after the release of the album "As I Walk Home" in Early 2003.
Mikel attended Karns High before heading off to Maryville College. After three years in Maryville, Mikel moved back to Knoxville and the University of Tennessee.
Soon thereafter, night-long writing sessions turned into jam sessions with close friends in small Fort Sanders apartments and eventually into spots at open-mic nights.
When club owners and other local musicians began to show interest, shows at coffeehouses and clubs, opening for bigger names, and "Songwriter Showcases" began to be regular occurrences for Mikel and his all-original brand of intelligent acoustic soul.
Pouring from the pen of this lifetime writer are songs of life and love, growth and change, and a deeper-than-skin search for truth.
Mikel's story of reflection and devotion in "Baby Names" delivers a rambling man's bout with a tough decision and the impact he makes on the people who hear his song.
"I saw the Sun, as it set on the clouds/ and kind of wondered where I would end up,/ then I thought of you, but just for a second/ then smiled to myself and thought, 'what could I do?"
In an emotion filled ballad of moving on, Mikel's "Last Sad Song" depicts the changes that come along with recognizing that point in life when all that's left to do is to pick up and go on. Coupling these thought-provoking ballads on Mikel's upcoming full-length CD "As I Walk Home" are upbeat, catchy tunes like "Morning's Over" and "Another Day" as well as the ultimate love-for-the-unknowing dedication, "Reflection." "Tomorrow" is a duet which was co-written with Atlanta singer/songwriter Casi Lea.
Mikel's live show consists of acoustic versions of his songs, covers of popular and classic songs: John Mayer, Ben Harper, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and covers of lesser-known artists like Jack Johnson, Howie Day, and Graham Colton.
