Description
Pat Boardman is a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter influenced by old Blues recordings and the Folk boom of the Sixties and Seventies. That's when the New York Greenwich Village scene had dozens of successful Folkies and protest singers, with Bob Dylan leading the way into the Folk-Rock era. Pat began performing at the age of fourteen in coffee houses in the port cities along the Welland Canal, and six years later he began traveling to the cities. In Yorkville, the Toronto Folk music neighborhood, Pat was able to begin writing music in addition to playing requests of well-known songs by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Woody Guthrie, Dave Van Ronck, Phil Ochs, and Gordon Lightfoot. He moved to Vancouver, writing music along the way, and blending deeper into the Hippie sub-culture. By 1973, the psychedelic era was at its peak, and parties were everywhere. There were concerts by all the Classic Rock bands in the mid-Seventies, and Pat was a regular at concerts by The Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, America, and The Eagles. Vancouver was the ideal place to see all the Classic Rock bands. Pat lived variously in Montreal, Boston, and New York. This CD contains original songs in a variety of theme styles. Pat plays four instruments: Guitar, Piano, Harmonica and Autoharp. He also sings harmony lines to his main vocal, and studio players were brought in to play bass, drums, violin, and electric guitars. Home base is now Toronto, where he studies Martial Arts. Traveling is a difficult way to get organized, because day-to-day survival becomes a full-time job. Pat has more CDs that will be released within the year. There are no plans to tour or form a permanent band, due to a serious epileptic condition. Pat now studies Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan, a Chinese martial art that develops energy control and stimulates health and longevity. Musicians routinely burn out, because they need substances (as Pat relied on in the younger years). Drugs, booze and cigarettes have killed some of the best musicians at the top of their careers.
Cigarettes led to the deaths of Jerry Garcia and Frank Zappa. Heroin killed Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Booze killed Jim Morrison. Pat has a theory that you should never get too rich, because you can never die as long as you still owe money. There will be more studio work in future albums...it's the ideal way to control song arrangements in a permanent collection. Pat would like to thank producers Greg English and Jesse Cook for all their help in coordinating the sessions. For positive energy, thanks to: Neurologist Dr. Peter Carlen, Toronto Western Hospital; Dr. Essien Stopnicki, and wife Dr. Tali, S. of the Toronto Stress Center & Research Clinic; Tai Chi instructors at the school of the founding family's eldest son, Sifu Eddy Wu Kwong Yu.
