Description
Philip Wesley is a contemporary solo piano artist who's artistry has been compared to an early David Lanz. His debut release "Finding Solace" was released in 2002 and is a tender collection of original solo piano music. His newest release is entitled "In a Lifetime" and contains 14 new songs to stir the soul.
SONG PROFILES FROM THE CD "IN A LIFETIME"
1. COMFORT AND JOY. This song was written on the heels of my first cd which was around Christmas 2002. During the holiday season I always eagerly anticipate spending time with family, opening presents, stuffing my face, and of course playing and listening to holiday music. While this song is not an overtly, instantly recognizable holiday tune, it is for me, a song of joyful anticipation.
2. EQUESTRIAN DREAM. Some of my most relaxing experiences have been on horse back. Imagine yourself on the perfect day... on the perfect horse... an empty, vast horizon as far as you can see... and nothing in your way.
3. FRIENDS. I think poet James Metcalfe described it best when he wrote... " I thank the friends I have... for all they do for me... with their encouragement and with... their faithful company... they sympathize when I am sad... they lift me when I fall... they are always by my side... to heed my beck and call... indeed they are the truest best friends... that anyone could find... and that is why their faces are... forever in my mind... and that is why their names are forever in my heart... and why I treasure them and hope... that we shall never part... I thank my friends eternally ... who are so good and true... and hope that I may serve with them... the deeds I try to do."
4. GREENSLEEVES. Think of this song as a sneak preview to my next release. Hint, hint. Yup, that's right. A Christmas cd! Even though this song is associated with Christmas, its melody was originally based on an old English folk tune. I've taken some liberties with the time signatures. It starts out with a slow to a fast 6/8 to a faster and emphatic 4/4. This is by far one of my favorite tunes anytime of the year! I hope you enjoy my arrangement.
5. IN A LIFETIME. Our life and time on this planet is precious. We can choose to spend our lives in focused pursuit of our dreams, our goals, our happiness, or let life slip away. How are you spending your life? What you do today is important because you are giving up a day of your life for it. Make it something good.
6. IN THE EYES OF A CHILD. In May of 2003 I was asked to be a guest artist at a children's piano recital. After the recital, I played a few songs and talked with the children and their parents. One little girl in particular who couldn't have been older than 5 or 6 asked if she could play one of her songs for me. As she sat there playing and feet dangling over the pedals, I thought about the innocence of childhood. After she finished, everyone clapped and praised her. She turned to me, looked up with her big, bright eyes and said: "You want to hear it again!" My heart just melted. At that moment looking into her eyes I thought about what it would feel like to be a parent, but also what the world must look like in the eyes of a child.
7. LOVE REMEMBERED. This song took shape on a rainy afternoon. As I looked out my window I thought about old friends missing from my life. I continued to play and a lamenting feeling came over me. Within 25 minutes, this song wrote itself. Later, I dedicated this song in loving memory of Lauren Armstrong whose life was tragically cut short. May her memory live on through this song.
8. NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN. Every generation of artists have their musical influences. For Elvis it was spirituals, country, and blues. For the Beatles it was American R&B music, for Ozzy Ozbourne it was people like Paul McCartney. As for me, my musical influences over the years have varied. However my single greatest musical influence is a guy out in Seattle named David Lanz. David is my American "piano" Idol. His influences include some of the greatest bands from the 60's and 70's. In 1990, David arranged this Moody Blues classic on his "Skyline Firedance" CD. Here we are 14 years later and I've included my recording of it on this CD. (Don't worry all you litigious people. I got permission and paid my 8.5 cents per song :) This is my tribute to David Lanz, one of contemporary music's greatest artists. For more info on David go to www.davidlanz.com.
9. ODE TO A COMPOSER. This song is actually an improv on Pachabel's Cannon in D. Except I moved the key up a third to F major. It follows the same framework in terms of the chord progressions, and some liberties with the melody. There have been so many versions and arrangements with this song, so why not throw my hat in the ring? Since it is an improv, this song is never played the exact same way twice. Every time I play it, there are little nuances here and there that make the song a bit different. This is another little tribute to a great composer.
10. PURSUIT OF PASSION. Hanging on the wall above my piano is a picture of a lone tree by a lake with a caption that reads "Passion" "There are many things in life that will capture your eye, but very few will capture your heart. These are the one's to pursue. These are the ones worth keeping." For me that passion is the piano. My passion for this magnificent instrument has never diminished over the years, but grown stronger. My hope for you is that you find your passion and pursue it with all your heart.
11. STATE OF GRACE. Another word for grace is blessing or gift. Each of us has a gift within us to share with the world. God has blessed my life with so many gifts. This is a song of thanks. Thank you God for always sitting beside me on that bench, guiding my heart, my hands, my life.
12. SUNDAY EVENING INSPIRATION. Imagine it is the end of the weekend; things are winding down before bed and the beginning of a long work week. You close your eyes... and in the distance you hear music.
13. WINDOW'S TO THE SOUL. It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. It is also said that the eyes are usually the one thing that doesn't appear to age like the rest of the body. I can attest to this having worked in health care for the past 11 years. I remember one patient in particular who touched my soul with her words of kindness and thankfulness for the care she received. In this heartfelt moment I could see the sincerity in her eyes.
14. WINGS TO FREEDOM. Improvisation for me is always a great way to write new material and develop new songs. This song started out as just a three note pattern in the right hand, and all the rest followed. The imagery I had playing this song was of a bird in flight and the feeling of freedom if I had the wings to fly far, far away.
