Carmichael Atlanta's "Diamond In The Rough"
Interview By Monica Clark
Sitting down to interview Carmichael was a breath of fresh air. Despite his amazing talent and impending success, he still has this humble shyness about him. Just a week after having major oral surgery, Carmichael, came out and gave his all to secure a spot in the Absolut Jams R&B talent search finals. A mouth full of stitches wasn't going to deter him. As he walked in the room, I had to reposition myself to get a full view of this tall chocolate dread locked brotha. Which immediately led to my first question...
MC: Exactly, how tall are you?
Carmichael: "6'4 and still drinking soy milk." (laugh)
MC: So, tell me, where did it all begin for you and how did you end up in Atlanta?
Carmichael: "Well, I was born in Dillon, South Carolina. But grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. It was in 1994 that I decided to come to Atlanta to pursue a career as a
singer/songwriter. I packed two suitcases, a few garbage bags and crammed it all into my car and I hit the road on a mission with a purpose and a vision. Sounds kinda like the Clampett's, huh, minus all that cash (chuckles)."
MC: What was your first taste of the music industry?
Carmichael: " Shortly after I came to here, I signed a record deal with a major Atlanta based company. But I guess the timing wasn't right for me. I later worked with
and wrote for producer Joe Rich and his brother Tony Rich of "The Tony Rich Project". I also had the privilege of performing in the same show with artists like India Arie and American Idol's Ruben Studdard, prior to their fame. From day one I knew that these individuals had a special gift and that they were going to be very successful, long before the mainstream music industry took notice. I truly feel that my time to shine is near. I have been patient for a long time and will continue to be, because my eyes have seen first-hand that a lot of times it takes the mainstream music industry a long time to recognize and accept individuals with true talent. So until then I'll continue to make things happen on my own."
MC: When did you first realize your passion for singing and songwriting?
Carmichael: "Every since I was about thirteen years old I've been singing but when someone would come around I would start messing around and singing all crazy because I was very shy. It all became clear in high school on day when was cutting class. I would usually go to the gym to workout but for some strange reason on this day I want to the auditorium. In our auditorium was a baby grand piano on the stage that was always out of tune but sounded good to everybody else. I sat at that piano and figured out how to play my first song "Lean On Me" and I looked out into that auditorium filled with chairs and actually saw myself in concert. I knew right then that music was my destiny."
MC: What motivates you?
Carmichael: "I've been blessed with a gift and a vision... I refuse to punch a clock for the rest of my life. So that leaves me no choice but to make something happen. And of course, my biggest inspiration Ms. Patricia Carmichael, my mom."
MC: What is your vision for the future?
Carmichael: "I see myself owning and operating a successful record company. At the same time maintaining my status as an artist sort of like a male Madonna but more than anything, I want to be an inspiration through my music. I feel as an artist I have to take responsibility for my music and the image it portrays. Even though music is entertainment, it still affects the way people live."
MC: What advice do you have for other aspiring artists?
Carmichael: One, is to learn as much as you can about the industry. Do your homework because there are a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing. You know what I'm talking about, those brothas with business cards but no business. The other advice is to be proactive, don't wait on someone else to make your dream come true.
MC: You recently released your own CD, how is that project coming along?
Carmichael: Everyday is an uphill battle but I would have to say that progress is pretty good considering I have to compete with the major labels and their major budgets. (lol) I receive a lot of positive reviews on http://cdbaby.com/Carmichael where people listen to snippets and comment.
MC: Is there anything else you'd like to say before we get out of here?
Carmichael: Yes, I'd like to let everyone in Atlanta know that my CD is entitled "You Can't Break Me!" and it consists of sixteen beautiful songs that through efforts other than my own was made possible. Peter Moore of Black Jacket Music Group (BMI), Joe Rich & Tony Rich, Roderick May, Harold Littlejohn, Ed Hart, Terrence Brown, Altovese Johnson, Heratio, Lynette Wilson, Monica Clark, Lamont Gant and Kim Cummings. Check out my snippets.
