Description
In a modern world where pop stars lip sync there songs in order to cover-up what’s really there, singer-songwriter Dave Murphy strives to do something quite different. That is, to uncover and embrace what’s really there, whatever that is, in himself and in all of us collectively. Murphy welcomes the chance to share his journey and takes you on a lyrical pilgrimage through the American soul. He draws inspiration from a wide range of American influences, including Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
Murphy’s songs speak of love, treasured and lost, and the struggle for faith, hope, and redemption. In April 1999 freelance music critic/writer Chris Smith dubbed Murphy “a musical Raymond Carver” and went on to say that “Murphy taps the raw nerve so many struggling songwriters can’t seem to find” *
Chasing Ghosts, Murphy’s second and latest LP was released independently in January 2003. It received significant airplay on “AAA” and “Americana” radio stations across the country. In late 2003 Chasing Ghosts was a “Top 5-most added” CD on the national “Americana Charts”** and by early 2004 Chasing Ghosts spent over 12 weeks on the national “Top 35” Folk Airplay Charts”***
Chasing Ghosts was co-produced by Marc Muller a talented multi-instrumentalist who has been a member of country superstar Shania Twain’s touring band since 1995. He also co-produced Steve Forbert’s latest record. Forbert, the Grammy-nominated troubadour makes a guest appearance on Chasing Ghosts.
“The songs are a masterful blend of Country, Americana and Folk Rock…a wonderful triumph of the human spirit in song.” Rick Rock Tribes Hill News (May ‘03)
In 2000, Murphy put together a 5-Song sampler EP called Things I Can’t Forget. One of the cuts on this record was Murphy’s rendition of a Robert Earl Keen song called “Merry Christmas from the Family”. This cut would later appear on A Jersey Shore Christmas, a CD compilation of Christmas songs recorded by New Jersey artists released by L.A.S. Music Group in 2003. In addition to Murphy’s version of the Keen song, the CD features cuts from Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny and others.
Under the Lights, Murphy’s debut LP, was released in 1998. It was selected as a prestigious “DIY Top 12 Pick” in the December 1999 issue of Performing Songwriter. Neil Fagan of Performing Songwriter describes Murphy’s work as “eloquent and illuminating.” Glen Burtnick appears as a special guest.
Murphy’s live performances are a reflection of his desire to peal away the layers. He generally will appear solo or backed by one or more of his talented sidemen. His songs, his warm whiskey tinged voice and his infectious stage presence makes every Dave Murphy show a special one. Murphy has shared the stage with some of the finest artists on the scene today including Steve Forbert, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Vic Chesnutt, Slaid Cleaves, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Alejandro Escovedo and Suzanne Vega.
Currently Murphy performs primarily on the east coast. He’s played such venues as the Tin Angel in Philadelphia, the Acoustic Caf in Bridgeport, CT, Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, N.J., Maxwell’s in Hoboken, N.J. and the Living Room, the Knitting Factory & the Postcrypt Caf at Columbia University, all in New York City. Murphy continues to enjoy sharing his music with a loyal and ever-growing audience.
During an on-air interview on WFUV*** in New York, host John Platt, aptly described Murphy as “the real thing.” We think that says an awful lot about Dave Murphy and his music. His CD’s are available on his website www.murphyworld.com or directly through www.cdbaby.com. Currently he is preparing to work on a new full length CD of all original material that should be released sometime in late 2005 or early 2006.
