Description
Darren Michaels's second solo offering, equilibrium, is a deeper study in completely solo bass compositions as well as the art of looping. As with his first effort, green, Darren paints an enthralling musical canvas with the use of advanced techniques, effects, looping, and musical sleight of hand.
Equilibrium has a slightly harder edge sound as it weaves through a series of styles containing mostly instrumental pieces. Darren is joined on a few ensemble compositions by Mark Chairo (guitar), Chris Moore (drums, keys, and programming), and Acid Jack (vocals), however the CD is mainly solo bass in variations of layers, voice, role, and timbre. Fans of green will not be disappointed as Darren's sensitivity to composition and sense of humor remain intact but will be wonderfully engaged by this slightly brooding, at times mellow, and ultimately rejoicing take on the electric bass as a compositional instrument.
