Description
Musical talent is something that is no stranger to Terri Diviniti Smiths family. Her father was a saxophone player and both of her parents sang and were very active in their church choirs. Like her five siblings, Diviniti began plating a musical instrument at a young age. Her mother began teaching her the violin via the Suzuki method when she was only six years old. She excelled-and eventually played with the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, also based in the metro-Detroit area.
As she grew up, she also developed a love for writing-especially poetry. She wrote constantly and received recognition from her high school poetry club and was a finalist in a poetry contest sponsored by a local college. Writing became a way for Diviniti to make her views and feelings known to those around her. She also began writing songs during this time.
During her high school years, she met and became good friends with Detroit-based DJ and producer Terrence Parker, who introduced her to house music. As Divinitis love for the music grew, she and Terrence wrote and recorded together. Although the material they worked on was never released, the experience proved to be a glimpse into things to come.
While music and writing remained prominent in her life, Diviniti chose education as her primary career. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from a local university in 1996. Diviniti is still an elementary school teacher in the Detroit Public Schools.
In February of 2003, Diviniti met Maurice PirahnaHead Herd, who later introduced her to Jennifer Witcher, a.k.a. DJ Minx. Besides becoming Pirahnas manager, she began to work with him as a vocalist also. The writing/production team of Pirahna and Diviniti has forged such tracks as Find A Way (Women on Wax) and Poem for a Lost One (Moods and Grooves). DJ Minx has collaborated on tracks with Diviniti as well, including Get Live, A Taste of the Honeys EP, and several other songs to be released in 2005. With her music being played by DJs such as Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, and Timmy Regisford, edited by Danny Krivit and Moodyman, and remixed by artists like Mr. G, and DJ Spinna, Diviniti is a definite up-and-coming writer and vocalist with the potential for much success in the house arena and beyond.
