as i have been given the task of writing down diana and is life history - with the orders not to go off on some writing rampage as i am known to do - i will do as i have always done with any chore set before me: i simply follow the admirable advice of the king of hearts in alice in wonderland, begin at the beginning, and go on until you come to the end: then stop.
first off i should bring to your attention that i began playing piano at age 5, clarinet at 11. yet it wasnt until an enlightened teenage moment with a bottle of 20/20 in my guitar playing side-kick mike fosters basement that rock and roll and cherchez la femme actually took effect. i began playing in club bands at the age of 14 - which helped support me through school. college involved: art, at memphis college of art; music, at memphis and north texas state universities - texas is where i was given my first writing job: tv and radio commercials - southwest airlines, tennessee & alabama tourism, mcdonalds, walmart, etc.
diana on the other hand began her singing career as a child singing in churches and youth groups. she supported herself in school singing in folk/country and then jazz bands - although unlike myself she remained free from 20/20. diana studied chemistry, psychology (as requested by her mother) and music and voice at the university of tennessee and of memphis. shes done a lot of radio and tv commercials such as, back yard burger, cook and love, la-z-boy and a bunch of southern banks. when we first met, diana said she thought either hes in want of good sense or a genius. she is fond of quoting syrus, maxims when describing me, non pote non sapere qui se stultum intellgit (a man must have some wit to know he is a fool). i do love her.
anyway, diana and i met at a music store and married three weeks later. she was 16 at the time. an image momentarily frozen in time pictures me beaming, a judge staring wide-eyed into space and diana looking at me with a little bit of concern. that was a few years ago (two spent in europe), about 300 original songs, at least 1000 club dates, way too many nights spent in nashville's purgatory called writers' rounds (we write for air deluxe music group in nashville) and somewhere around 3062 mornings of diana sitting across a breakfast table watching me eat corn flakes, smoke a marlboro and smile at her pretty face - theres usually a bead of milk dripping down my chin.
