Description
Frank Solivan II was born into a musical family in Modesto, California in 1977.
As a young boy growing up on a dairy farm, his mother Lorene and father Frank Sr. took him to music festivals all over the state. Gifted musicians themselves, Lorene and Frank Sr. taught him to sing and play the fiddle and banjo. By the age of twelve Frank took first place in a number of fiddle and banjo contests, including the Georgetown, La Grange, and Columbia. While in high school, Frank studied
the classical side of music on the cello and spent his summer vacations working at a pack station with horses and mules as a wrangler in the High Sierras. By the end of high school, calloused hands and all, Solivan had been presented with the most improved musician award and played second chair cello in the California State Honor Orchestra. Frank was soon giving lessons to students of his own.
In 1995 Frank moved to Alaska and used his previous experiences in the wilderness as a wrangler, hunter, fisherman and guide in California to make The Last Frontier a unique environment for his talents to evolve. Alaska fed the musical soul Frank inherited and his playing improved so much he took first place in the Alaska State Fair fiddle contest four years in a row. Frank also taught private lessons on fiddle, mandolin and guitar. His high standards and excellent instruction bore fruit; after mentoring the award-winning Bearfoot Bluegrass band they won the best new band competition at the 2001 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
His song writing began to develop as well, complementing his virtuosity with stringed instruments. In 1997 he took a tour with bluegrass legend Ginger Boatwright who asked, Do you play the mandolin? Frank answered yes- which wasnt exactly the truth- but with serious study, practice, performances and writing for the instrument an album featuring Frank on mandolin and original songs was conceived. I Am a Rambler, was released on Franks own record label (Fiddlemon music) in 2002 and includes the talents of such Nashville based artists as Rob Ickes, David Grier, Byron House, Mark Winchester, Shad Cobb, Richard Bailey, JD Blair, Kathy Chiavola, and Billy Davis. After the release 4 songs were entered in the Alaska Public Radio Network song of the year contest. Every one placed in the top 5 of their respective categories- Day to Day won first in the bluegrass and Dirty Kitchen took second in the instrumental. A Mothers Hand and I am a Rambler also placed. Overall, Frank won Judges Favorite.
At this point in his career, Frank was equally at ease with fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, viola or cello. He auditioned for the US Navy band Country Current and after boot camp became one of their members in July, 2003. Frank played his first gig with Country Current on the Mall in DC before a 100,000 plus audience, and continues playing for public concerts, bluegrass festivals, The President, generals, admirals and foreign dignitaries from various countries.
Frank is an incredible musician in every dimension- singing, picking, lifting notes to the heavens, riffing slow as a big brown river, dancing tunes into the eager souls of his audiences. Whether dropping your jaw when his music explodes or tugging at your heart strings with a sweet ballad, you will appreciate the wonder
and professionalism of the musical gifts of Frank Solivan II.
