Description
Guitarist J.J. Vicars blasts through 13 tunes like a '57 Chevy with a 350 big block under the hood decked out with Edelbrock carb, headers and intake manifold. His now-legendary Gibson Firebird plugged into his trusty Music Man amp fires off lethal shards of BluesRock on 8 songs that include Tailgators bassist J.J. Barrera and founding Leroi Brother/original T-Bird,Texas drum legend Mike Buck.He navigates his pawn shop acoustic all by his lonesome through 5 numbers of primitive lowdown backporch boogie.Lock up yer daughters!
The album opens up with an uptempo rendition of Freddie King's SEE SEE BABY,goes into J.J.'s "...biker rock anthem..." ROCK MY WORLD,and then kicks it up ANOTHER notch with a burning rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis' REAL WILD CHILD,a song that was also recently covered by Brian Setzer on his Sun Records Tribute CD.J.J.'S BOOGIE continues the tradition of Texas Guitar Boogie that started with Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightnin' Hopkins and carried on through Johnny Winter and SRV.The album then kicks back into a comfortable groove with a couple of funky shuffles, the laid back LEAVIN' IN THE MORNIN' and the rollicking DOWN ON MY LUCK.He shows off his Jazz/R&B leanings with the Bill Doggett/Jimmy Smith-influenced CROW'S FEET 'N' CHICKEN ASS.His signature song TAKE ME ON DOWN TO MEMPHIS closes out the band portion of the CD with a bang and not a whimper. Two and half minutes of pure, unadulterated, uncomprimising turn-the-dump-over-and-go-home-with-the-waitress Rock'n'nRoll. The guitar solo is "...part Chuck Berry, part Cliff Gallup (Gene Vincent),part Allen Collins (original Skynyrd) and all J.J. Vicars!"
The second half of the CD travels the other side.Solo acoustic, dripping like chicken grease with the Country Blues influences of Lightnin' Hopkins and John Lee Hooker.TELL ME and BOOGIE WITH GRANNY are directly out of the Lightnin' Hopkins school,an influence J.J. proudly wears on his sleeve, while GOTTA RIDE takes the listener down a dark swampy backroad to the-jukejoint-beyond-time.Sounds like this haven't been heard since John Lee was recording in Detroit.STAYED IN TEXAS is an autobiographical song in the tradition of the East Texas Country Blues players such as Lightnin' and Mance Lipscomb.SPANISH FANDANGO closes out the CD.An old folk song of mysterious origins it's best known as a parlor piece from the 1800's.The arrangement here is pure J.J. Vicars, adapted to a blues structure rather than the traditional waltz-like structure that's often heard.
For his debut release he decided that it would be best to capture the music that he started with and that's exactly what he does. The influences are obvious-Lightnin' Hopkins,Freddie King,Chuck Berry,Don Leady (Tailgators),Jimmie Vaughan (T-birds),John Lee Hooker-yet it's purely his own.He has taken the tradition of Texas guitarists and brought it forward into this modern world we all live in like no other. And it ROCKS.
