Introducing Kate & Hollis
"If you like great stories, warm voices with a natural harmony blend, traditional sound and fresh new songs then you're bound to love Kate and Hollis's, 'The Last Chore'."
Pat Moore, Host of CKCU FM 93.1
"The Last Chore" combines strong song writing skills, sweet harmonies and sparkling instrumentals on guitar, dobro and old-time banjo to produce a folk roots style with hints of Mountain, Bluegrass and Jazz.
With over thirty years of musical experience each, Kate and Hollis's meeting in 2004 sparked an instant, magical chemistry. Their personal chemistry kicked in as well and they were married August 13, 2005.
"The Last Chore" contains 11 originals and two traditional ballads arranged in their own unique style.
Their home is nestled between the Ottawa River and Torbolton Forest in the village of Constance Bay near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Kate Morgan
Kate received her first guitar at the age of nine and never looked back. "It was worn out in a matter of months." A single act for many years, she eventually formed a folk duo in the early 1990's called Double Gurl Trouble. In need of a Dobro player to play on their Cd, she met Hollis through mutual friends. A new duo and musical direction was born.
Kate's early musical influences came from icons like Joni Mitchell, Emmy Lou Harris and Ellen MacElwain. She discovered a passion for Bluegrass (Newgrass) and Mountain ballads from such talented artists as Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss.
Her strong writing skills and guitar playing are combined with her love of harmony singing. "I had a desire to sing, play and write for as long as I can remember. I couldn't imagine spending a day without doing something related to music. It is in my soul as naturally as breathing."
Hollis Morgan
At the age of twelve Hollis purchased his first five string banjo. A twelve string guitar quickly followed. "It was an old Stella that didn't have a bridge; so I carved a new one out of maple with a pocket knife, it worked pretty well!"
As a young adult Hollis became active in the music scene in the mid-west and Toronto forming two rock bands call "The Creeps" and "Amontillado". He also formed a folk-rock group in the Ottawa area called "Ironwood". "When the Beatles happened, I got side-tracked into Rock'n Roll.."
As well as being in a duo he is presently a member of the Ottawa based quintet "Hurry Up and Wait" and also works with various musicians around Ottawa playing resophonic guitar, banjo and guitar.
Hollis's songs reflect life's common hardships as well as it's many humorous moments.
Early influences were Pete Seeger, Huddie Ledbetter, Phil Ochs, and Merle Travis. Current influences are Mark Knopfler, Jerry Douglas, Django Reinhardt, and Lenny Breau.
