Who is Kenney Z? He is a music historian with his roots in Acid Jazz, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and Rap. Blending these musical genres together with his street wise savvy lyrics, he has created what he calls Gospel Funk, Rhythm and Praise. His music is original and thought provoking.
Kenney Z. is an established percussionist and bass guitar player who writes and produces all his unique sounds in real time.
Some of his musical influences include, the Winans, Yolanda Adams, Earth Wind and Fire,James Brown,Cameo,The
Gap Band,George Clinton,The Jazz Crusaders,Ramsey Lewis,Grover Washington Jr.,Norman Brown,Teddy Riley, D.J. Quik,Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. Some of his musical proteges from Compton.
A resident of Watts and Compton, Kenney Z. emerged from the rubble of the Watts Riot. Surviving the street life of gangs and violence, he has evolved as a messenger of the gospel, reaching out to bring the youth to a higher consciousness of self-worth and dignity.
