Description
Scott Lanaway is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter/musician/performer.
Scott has been making music for years: 'It's in my blood. It's cinematic for me. I live for music. Need to create it. I turn into a bit of a miserable guy when I'm kept away from it for too long'.
His first public endeavor was a band called Radio One, formed in Montreal, Canada in 1995. Radio One recorded an E.P. entitled 'Transit Radio, Observed' (1996) which became a college radio favourite. The band played many live shows, including a national TV appearance on CBC television.
A new band was formed in 1998 called m-1 (later re-named peninsula), releasing 'Blue Night, No Season' (1999), a full-legnth album that went to #1 at many college radio stations in Canada. (Starting in 2004, this album gained and has maintained a second life on U.S. TV networks such as VH1 and MTV, being used on shows such as True Life and Behind The Music among many others.)
In 2000, Scott suffered a major back injury which kept him away from music for awhile. 'I pretty much spent months in bed, in total agony, unable to move very well. My TV was stuck on CNN so I became an expert in the U.S. Presidential election. I did a lot of reading and worrying. I didn't know if I'd ever be able to play music again.'
That makes the new release 'Answering Machine Diaries' (2006) even more poignant for Scott. 'This release is my first solo one. I gradually built up a pretty good home studio with lots of instruments and equipment. So when inspiration struck I was able to work at my own pace. I have many many songs still in progress but these ones are a good cross section of the work. They are literally soundtracks to events in my life, the movies of the mind. I stretched as an artist on this more than I ever have, and it's a satisfying feeling'.
