"When you hear Mala Waldron's soulful voice ... you realize that you are experiencing something very special, for Waldron is not only an accomplished vocalist and songwriter, but also a fine pianist who hits the keys with great precision, bringing various musical influences into a jazz realm."
Ernest Barteldes - Greenwich Village Gazette (Mar 28, 2006)
"...Her lovely & recent effort is an amalgam of fine originals ... Crossing over into several musical schools ... Mala's vocalise smiles back at you poignantly, and she's her own singer as she seems to interpret the vocal tradition in her singular & unique style of rendition. Might I suggest that Mala seems to offer a great deal of thought in her musical offerings, presentation & choice of programme.
She's a keeper!"
George W. Carroll/The Musicians' Ombudsman
Ejazznews.com, March 10, 2006
"Mala Waldron's cool, sophisticated work is just the sort of thing that could nudge jazz closer to the mainstream."
Jon Olsen, Blogcritics.org - Indie Round-up
ABOUT MALA:
After 2 Japanese label deals (Tokuma Communications and 3361/Black), jazz/soul vocalist, pianist & songwriter, Mala Waldron feels as if shes starting over with "Always There" as it's not only her first indie release, but also her first U.S. release as well.
No stranger to the music business, Mala has been doing gigs since she was 15. As the child of two professional jazz pianists, shes also no stranger to the many styles of jazz.
"I was influenced as much by my mother's piano playing, as I was by her record collection," states the songstress. She remembers listening to artists such as Donny Hathaway (her favorite), Joni Mitchell, Roberta Flack and Les McCann.
Starting with classical piano at age 7, and then, wanting to learn to improvise, Mala studied her father's recordings. She feels she got the best jazz education, and few would argue. Her dad was jazz pianist/composer, Mal Waldron, most well known as Billie Holiday's last accompanist and for composing "Soul Eyes," first recorded by John Coltrane.
Mala received a B.A. from SUNY College at Old Westbury where she studied under chairman, multiple reed player, Makanda Ken McIntyre. A peak college experience was provided through one of her professors, composer/arranger, James "Jabbo" Ware. Jabbo took her under his wing and featured her during several concerts with his "Me We & Them Orchestra" as they played Mala's arrangements of her original songs.
She remembers it fondly, "I was only 20 years old, and there I was in the midst of jazz greats like, Jimmy Owens and Cecil Bridgewater. It could have been very intimidating, but they treated me like family. It was so great!"
Another peak experience came in 1995, when Mala toured Japan with her father. They also recorded a CD entitled "He's My Father." The success of that album lead to her debut solo release, "Lullabye" the following year.
Mala's performance credits include working with Andy Bey, Makanda Ken McIntyre, Don Braden, Jeanne Lee, Cecil McBee, George Cables, James Williams, Billy Drummond, Victor Lewis, Melvin Sparks, John Betsch, James "Jabbo" Ware ME WE & THEM Orchestra, Hilton Ruiz, Andrei Strobert, Warren Smith and violinist, Naoko Terai.
