Description

Hi, my name is Dada Nabhaniilananda. I am a monk, a musician, a writer and a meditation teacher with the spiritual movement Ananda Marga - "The Path of Bliss". I'm originally from New Zealand where I started playing music when I was 6, and composing when I was 11. I branched out into other instruments, including cello, clarinet, trumpet and euphonium (a kind of small tuba). After 13 years of piano I switched to guitar and vocals - it was a practical decision - pianos being a bit awkward to carry around.

When I was in University studying English literature (which has proved invaluable for lyric writing) I became interested in meditation and oriental mysticism, and ended up going to India and Nepal to study yoga, and in 1979 I was ordained as a yogic monk. Quite a departure from the expected course for a young New Zealand boy!

I've continued songwriting, recording and performing, and have produced seven albums - 3 of my own songs, 3 of spiritual chanting, and one of Indian music. I've also just published a book on meditation, and am working on a book on music production and a science fiction comedy story.

A lot of my songs are about issues of human rights, and ecological issues. I've been fortunate enough to be invited to perform all over the world at all sorts of international forums and ecological events, including the "Earth Summit" in Rio, Brazil in 1992 where I had a great time playing several huge shows with a hot Brazilian backing band. I use multimedia extensively in my concerts. I try to communicate a vision of hope for the future - I want people to come away feeling uplifted and motivated to do something for our planet. I use spectacular nature images to illustrate my songs - it adds a rich dimension to the experience of the audience.

I've been able to keep the balancing act of my spiritual life and my musical work going pretty well. I cut an unusual figure, in my orange robes, with a guitar - the media sometimes have a bit of fun with it - you can imagine the headlines - "The Singing Monk" and so forth. I don't mind - it's good publicity for me, and I want to get a message across. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

"The Fire Dragon Suite" is a collection of my early songs - actually a compilation from two albums recorded in 1984 and 1985 in Melbourne Australia. It has a more acoustic sound than my later albums - many listeners like it for the innocent mood. They are mostly spiritual songs about my experiences on the path of self discovery. It's gentle, relaxing stuff - I'm very happy with some of the melodies. You're supposed to listen to the words.
