Description
It is an honour for me to be asked to write about the Paganini Duo.
I have known Polish violinist Gustaw Szelski of the Paganini Duo since our years at the Sydney Conservatorium. He was envied for his incredibly beautiful sound.
Like all of us he was asked to do auditions - to get used to it - but in difference to us he got a position on the spot. He played during the next years in all the big Australian Symphony orchestras.
When I met him again he had freelanced, backing up people like Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Shirley Bassey, Marcia Hines, the Little River Band.
He had just started the Paganini Duo with the German cellist and guitarist Georg Mertens (same as Mertens-Moussa 1990-2002).
Their ensemble work is remarkable. Georg is not only a fantastic concert solo player on both instruments, he seems also to be able to follow any change, intentional or not, as if he knew of it before.
Together they moved from their Classical repertoire, which they played at weddings to Gypsy music, the style Gustaw plays absolutely superb.
Within a few years the Paganini Duo did one interstate tour after another and travelled overseas.
The CD gives a vivid impression of the atmosphere, starting from the first note, thriving with intensity and a forward pulse. And don't miss to listen to the little "Ungaresca", it's just unbelievable.
Highly recommended! (Steve Collins, Sydney 2005)
The Paganini Duo performs regularly in the "Cathedral Chamber" of the World Heritage listed limestone complex "Jenolan Caves" (Australia). This chamber is famous for probably the purest acoustics in the world and displays a great underground atmosphere and beauty.
Gypsy Music Concerts are held on every 4th Saturday of the month in 2006.
Gustaw and Georg are both members of the Blue Mountains Trio (see CD "Music for Grand Dining). Georg also recorded a solo CD for guitar (Re issued) and cello (Music at Jenolan Caves).
