Description
In the tradition of turn of the century players who pioneered the genre of old-time music, such as the Carter Family and Buell Kazee, the Shiftless Rounders offer an interpretation of their old-time tunes that is honest, authentic and above all captivating. Yet, like later legends such as Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt, they don't just mimic their predecessors. The Shiftless Rounders are deft in their own arrangements and with their obvious synergy as a duo have created a musical entity that allows its listeners to experience 'old-time in our time'.
Phill Saylor Wisor's devoted study of clawhammer banjo, the Sacred Harp singing tradition and the masters and manuscripts of old-time music, combined with a genuine and profound writing ability of his own, contribute to an artist who will only be increasingly visible as an important fixture on the American songwriting scene.
Ben Sidelinger joins Phill with almost psychic abilities. Drawing from a diverse musical background in jazz and flamenco, his homemade dobro seamlessly outlines Wisor's guitar and banjo creating an effect of one single, highly sophisticated instrument.
Then there's the vocals... Wisor and Sidelinger's voices in harmony create a haunting and deeply
resonating effect that often drives the songs and their listeners to a point of transcendence.
These guys have honed their skills and an opportunity to catch them live is a
fortunate one indeed. Riding a 50/50 split on traditional tunes and originals their show is well-rounded and highly entertaining.
