S.P. formed in Provo, Utah, in mid-2000, when vocalists/guitarists Tom Hurtado and Dan Cutler founded the five-piece music group. This was not the first time the duo teamed up to make music; they began collaborating, recording and performing right out of high school in early 1995. However, instead of simply performing as a duo, they opted to bring in other musicians giving their musical ideas more depth and dynamic ability. Cutler and Hurtado found assistance in talented multi-instrumentalist, Paul Washburn, an accomplished artist with a bluegrass and rock background from Sacramento, California. Eventually the group added bass and drums to round out their acoustic sound and record their self-titled debut album released in September 2000.
As soon as the band formed, local weekly gigs soon followed. Within a short time, word of the bands contagious and college-friendly new sound spread throughout the region winning several competitions and gaining a solid reputation among fans and fellow bands alike. In 2003, as the band was in the process of replacing their rhythm section, they decided to document the stripped down musical territory they had entered and recorded a live acoustic album. Simple People released Mamas Kitchen, in March of 2003. This CD was recorded in Hurtados childhood home in the style of field recordings done by Alan Lomax.
Despite independently achieving regional success, the band realized that they would need outside help to progress further and capture their signature sound onto a recording. Following successful tours and headlining several venues during 2003 and 2004, Simple People was given a generous opportunity to record a full-length CD at JMB Studios. The exceptional country artist J Marc Bailey and the internationally acclaimed musician, arranger and producer, Jamie Glaser, took on the project in spring of 2004. This exciting collaboration provided Simple People with the support and resources they needed to capture their sound on a full-length recording. The group released the highly anticipated recording, What We Meant from the Beginning, in fall of 2005.
Simple People is a Utah-based acoustic rock band known for its high-energy live shows and eclectic sound that combines folk sensibility with groove-heavy rock n roll. The five-piece band has been described as a mix of Dave Matthews Band and Barenaked Ladies with a little bit of Jack Johnson and James Brown thrown in for good measure. The bands latest album, What We Meant from the Beginning, features their new radio single Goodbye. Simple People consists of Tom Hurtado (vocals/guitar), Dan Cutler (vocals/guitar), Camron Levanger (lead guitar), Mark Adkins (bass) and Joel Stevenett (drums).
