Description
okay, i admit it: i get all gooey about words and music. a native nebraskan (go cornheads!!), i've been writing songs since i can remember. what once appeared to be an inevitable date with a formal composition major, turned into a hard right at the west coast to focus on songwriting.
here are some of the yin/yang highlights of quasi-careers that have supported my songhabit: scary string of straight jobs (turntable repairman -- oh yeah!!); piano player for harry anderson at harrah's tahoe; top 40 cover band new year's gig with zsa zsa in the crowd (yes, the zsa zsa) dancing the night away (in a plunging gown, might i add); puppet theater accompaniment (don't ask, don't tell); cinemax comedy special tunes and soundtracks; "nightstand with dick dietrick"; and various songs placed with various publishers -- you get the idea.
i pride myself on being a stylistically diverse writer whose sense of production and arrangement doesn't get in the way of the tunes. plus, i believe the world needs more "gag" tracks.
here are some of my ongoing influences that have made it virtually impossible for me to adapt to our brave-new-ricky-martin-world:
* jimmy webb
* burt bacharach
* joni mitchell
* james taylor
* steely dan
* randy newman
* billy joel
* mason williams
* michael mcdonald
again, you get the idea. later on guys like marc cohn and elvis costello started killin' me, not to mention remarkable players like bill evans and coltrane that forced my brain to stretch.
hope you enjoy the tracks.
