Description
Critics and fans alike rave about the "crystalline beauty" of Laura Harley's voice. In a time when the airwaves are jammed with the static of a world on the brink, Laura cuts through the noise. Her captivating voice, spiritual lyrics, and unforgettable songs have brought her devoted fans and critical acclaim throughout her musical career.
Laura's musical career began at the age of 15 when she taught herself to play guitar, wrote her first batch of songs, and hit the road with a decrepit Buick and an imitation Fender. At a high-school battle of the bands, Lauras singing caught the attention of guitarist Teddy Kim, who was looking for a collaborator. The two cut a demo under the name Sliver and burst onto the Minneapolis club scene. Sliver became a buzz act when the local college radio station obtained a copy of their demo and put it into heavy rotation. That year, before releasing a record, Sliver was voted Minneapolis' best new band in a ballot sponsored by the prestigious First Avenue Club. They went on to release two critically-acclaimed CDs, tour nationally, and chart in CMJ.
But in the midst of Slivers success, Laura felt pulled to grow and change in new and different ways. So in the midst of touring and recording, she went to graduate school and worked as a therapist and a life coach. Working with people in such an intimate and intense wayhaving people disclose to her their greatest secrets, biggest struggles, and most cherished dreamsgave Laura a deeper sensitivity for the human experience that profoundly affected her songwriting.
Continuing to follow her inner promptings to grow and develop personally and creatively, Laura made a spiritual pilgrimage to the Bah World Center in Haifa, Israel. There she realized that she was changing as an artist. She left that war-torn land humbled and longing to write songs with deeper spiritual meaning - to create music to soothe the wounds of modern life.
Returning with a new perspective and a desire to write in new ways, Laura decided that the time had come to part ways with Sliver. Teddy also felt ready for a change, and so the two forged out on their own to write and collaborate with a focus on Lauras new vision. In starting this new musical project, Laura took a leap of faith that turned into an emotional and spiritual search. Over the course of two years, Laura wrote and reworked scores of songs and thousands of measures in her search for the perfect blend of sound and meaning. The sound she searched for was always tantalizingly close but somehow just out of reach.
In 2004, while traveling in California, Laura and Teddy met Jarome Matthew, a producer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Laura played a rough mix of Shine for Jarome who immediately loved it. In Jarome, Laura found an ardent supporter who immediately connected with her vision.
Over the next year, the three worked long-distance to forge a new sound, producing Lauras best work to date. She has poured all of her experiences into a body of songs that draws on her background in indie rock and her love for electronica. With her new record, several years in the making, Laura has created songs rich in both melody and meaning - music that soothes the wounds of modern life.
