Description
Innovative banjo player Andy Thorn's debut solo release was a long time in the making. Having been a banjo player for well over ten years by age 23, Andy has been writing and compiling the material for this album for years. Andy has played in many different groups through the years. While studying music at the University of North Carolina, he played with the UNC Jazz Band as well as the Big Fat Gap bluegrass band. Andy spent the summers of 2003 and 04 in Colorado touring with the Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band, winning the Rockygrass banjo and band contests in 2003. 2005 was an exciting year for Andy, as touring with Larry Keel and Natural Bridge allowed him to play at some of the biggest festivals in the country. Highlights included backing up Jim Lauderdale at Boneroo, playing a set at Northwest String Summit with Darol Anger, jamming at Yonder Mountain's late night set at High Sierra, and sharing the stage with Chris Thile and Tony Trishcka in New York City.
While much of the mainstream bluegrass of ttoday is pieced together in the studio, "Bolin Creek," was recorded live in Thorn's living room. This allowed the players to react to each other rather than overdub perfect solos. What came out of this comfortable environment is some of the best work of all the players featured as well as great representations of Andy's original songs. Featuring nine original songs as well as some obscure covers, "Bolin Creek", is not your standard cookie-cutter bluegrass CD.
