Description
The musical theater major combines her classical training with plenty of pop sensibilities, creating a sound like no other in music and drawing fans from almost any genre. Alan Ho, Musiqtone.com
Ashley Wool's childhood was filled with the music of James Taylor, Natalie Merchant, Sophie B. Hawkins, Mariah Carey and Jewel. She was also hit hard by the teen pop craze of the late 90's; she cites her beloved bubblegum music as "a positive and fun influence." But it was her background in musical theatre that first kindled her love for performingand it was while she was playing the role of a butterfly rock star for Halloween, that she began writing songs of her own.
Now a 19-year-old college sophomore and musical theatre major, Ashley has already participated in a slew of plays, performed in chamber choirs and church choirs, been a vocal soloist for her school's jazz ensemble, and released Not Otherwise Specified, an independent CD of seven original pop-rock songs.
Not Otherwise Specified is, in simple terms, a successful mishmash of Ashleys varied and eclectic musical influences. Theres the energy-packed Automatoronic, which captures the essence of 90s pop with a Motown edge, the tangy, hip-hop-tinged You Got Me There, the explosive rock anthem and fan favorite I Dare Ya, and the soulful ballad Brendan, which brings Ashleys heartfelt vocals to the forefront amidst breezy piano and acoustic guitar.
Because Ashley appreciates all music, she does not feel the need to make herself out to be anything she is notmusically or stylistically. Hence, her album title refers to dropping industry labels as much as possible, and just making good music.
I don't expect to go down in history as one of the world's greatest singers or songwriters, Ashley writes on her official MySpace, but I do hope that I will be able to share my music and my passion with whoever likes it, and that my philosophy on music (and life) itself will help to open the minds of others.
