Description
Infatuated with the tones and timbres of vinyl records, beaumont (aka jeff matz) approaces the recording of music not as an outlet for writing traditional "songs," but rather as an oppurtunity to create audio "moods." The tones on "awake/asleep" are generated from multiple sources, but the process for each track followed a similar path: various instruments, including guitar, bass, synthesizer, turntable and software based instruments were improvised on, and the improvs were then resequenced and editied into the forms heard here. The clicks, pops, and other sonic detrius that is heard on these tracks is completely intentional-- it is a means to unite the music heard here with it's inspiration, the 33 and 1/3 vinyl disc. The beaumont project takes inspiration from all media forms, but is closely indebted to the electric work of miles davis, the european microsound scene, and the aesthetic of ECM records.
Beaumont, as mentioned, is the work of jeff matz, who aside from his recording projects is a Chicago based visual artist and visual arts teacher.
