What do you get when you mix atypical pop songs with hand-stitched sonic mischief? You get Los Angeles based BennyStrange; a quintet who combines the sounds of early Brit-pop pioneers with modern-day rock liberators. Honestly, it would be easy to lump BennyStrange in with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, The Rentals, or even early Radiohead but in doing so you would miss the idiosyncratic charm that makes this band shine unique. Their 2006 debut release, Nowhere Left to Run, is a 5-song collection which introduces itself like a warm hug and not the expected cold handshake.
This 2006 release features 3 songs mixed by Ethan Willoughby (Black Eyed Peas) and another 2 tracks mixed by Joe Zook (Modest Mouse). The EP was mastered by two time Grammy winner Robert Hadley. The guys in the band couldn't feel luckier. "We've worked with some seriously talented people to make this CD happen. It's been an awesome learning experience" -Avi Brown (lead vocal/guitar).
The EP kicks off with the lyrically vibrant Blip followed by the title track ballad Nowhere Left to Run. More than the others, these two songs show singer/songwriter, Avi Brown, taking up residence in a bruised psyche, starving fears and insecurities with perceptive yet quirky realizations. From there the band changes course with Sunshine, which as its title suggests, allows this multi-faceted band to open up a bit with a dash of sonic spice (complete with sitar and Indian-style strings). Glows in the Dark is a catchy and ultra-romantic reminder of what love is supposed to feel like. By the end of the first chorus, you too will find yourself singing aloud, Our love glows in the dark. The EP closes with the high-octane "Obscenity" and like any great album, it leaves you wanting more.
