Description
Tyrone Birkett
In building bridges between styles with sometimes-questionable results, occasionally we get a pleasant surprise. One such surprise is the music of progressive gospel/jazz saxophonist, Tyrone Birkett. Progressive, by using contemporary gospel as a springboard and extending it through jazz & soul music. Unique, in that influences have been assimilated to produce something new but still familiar.
One result of this is the CD release In The Fullness Of Time by Tyrone Birkett featuring vocalist Paula Ralph-Birkett. This project is slated to be released in fall of 2006.
On this highly anticipated debut, virtuosic but accessible saxophone improvisations are complemented by heartfelt vocal interpretations. Cool jazz, jazz fusion & modern jazz stylings, spoken word and an epic deconstruction/reconstruction on Awesome God, flow seamlessly together with warm ballads. And all of the selections are anchored by the attentive musicianship of a revolving cast of rhythm sections. Add to that Paula Ralph-Birketts powerful declarations & intimate monologues to bring to you the message of the music.
The message is to empower people to live this life abundantly and realize their purpose and destiny. And to demonstrate to those the variety of ways God expresses himself in the universe. And though being the creator and sustainer of all that is, he is still concerned about the life and well being of one person.
Starting as a workshop to hear his compositions, Tyrone Birkett formed a group in an effort to present gospel music from a different perspective. "Coming up I was equally influenced by jazz and contemporary gospel at the same time, remarked Tyrone. "No one was writing anything from that place, so decided to try it myself".
Consistently, he has carried this message to venues like the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lehman College Center for the Performing Arts, and Aaron Davis Hall, to name a few. And appeared on stages with Fred Hammond, Al Green, Karen Clark-Sheard, Richard Smallwood, jazz legend Frank Foster and even Little Richard! And the commitment to social causes can be cited by frequent visits to prisons and evidenced by participation in AIDS Awareness events sponsored by Bristol Myers and the Arthur Ashe Institute.
In keeping with an innovative approach, he has self-produced events to provide exposure for his music and others such as "SUNDAY NITE LIVE @ JUSTIN'S" a gospel showcase at world-famous Justin's Restaurant in NYC. The "Gospel/Jazz Convergence" theme events there are always well attended as well as appearances by gospel luminaries Tonex & Lisa McClendon. To further carry out this strategy, events at such venues as Jazz at Lincoln Center are being planned to support the CD release "In The Fullness Of Time".
