Description
Brooke Trout's unique brand of punk, blues and ska has heralded a lot of praise from fans. From the Oingo Boingo spook-house sounds of "Roller Coaster Lover," to the Eurythmics tinted "Winter," new wave sounds are greeted with an original blues styling. "Steel" is a macabre island ska, and "Presiding" almost beckons back to earlier Red Hot Chile Peppers punk. The rest of the album is devoted to hard pop punk, especially the PJ Harvey meets System of a Down style "Prince Harming." Altogether, "Bittersweet," is like a box of chocolates... sinful and satisfying, with a little something for everyone!
Lyrically too, "Bittersweet" plays with a variety of themes. The punk anthem, "Suburban Cocktail," begins with the satirical open, "You wear you best clothes/That's the way/You get your check and you get paid/Because you look good/You really look good." This of course is in stark contrast with the love ballads like "Raindrops" which are more in the style of Jack Johnson; deal with loss in love and life: "You hydroplaned into my bedroom/We drove too fast and then we died/It was over and done before it started/true love doesn't stop for a light."
Both uplifting, challenging and playful, "Bittersweet" is the perfect description for an album that deals with life, love and death in America.
