Description
The Buckeye Politicians History
On a Monday night in February of 1970 we drove to New York City for an audition at the most happening club in Harlem - Smalls Paradise. The audition was so successful that we were hired for the night. This marked the beginning of The Buckeye Politicians.
The Buckeye Politicians were loved in New York and became the favorite of many celebrities such as: Mohammed Ali, James Earl Jones, Richard Roundtree, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Flip Wilson, Dionne Warwick, George Clinton, Walt Clyde Frazer, Joe Cocker, Wilson Pickett and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (congressman).
In the fall of 1970 we recorded an album at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with producer Luther Dixon (Shirelles) and the single Girl I Could Love You More and I Wish It Would Rain was released on Scepter Records.
In 1973 we met Herb Gart, founder of the Rainbow Collection Ltd and manager of Don McLean (American Pie) and signed a contract with him. Through our friendship with the Commodores we were able to get an engagement for six weeks on the French Reveria at the Byblos Hotel in San Tropez. Herb Gart flew in an A&R man from EMI Records in London. He heard us and signed The Buckeye Politicians to a recording contract. The Buckeyes and Herb flew to London, where we checked out possible producers for our album. We played at The Speakeasy, where we gained many new fans including Keith Moon and John Entwhitle (The Who) and Freddie Mercury and Brian May (Queen). There we met and chose Alan Parsons (Alan Parsons Project and engineer of the Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd). We recorded at Abbey Road in the same studio The Beatles used. A single Sister Rose and Dreams were released on the EMI label in 1974. The Album with Alan Parsons (Hope for the Common Man) was never released because the master tapes were lost by an airline on the way back to the USA.
In the Fall of 1975, Herb Gart contracted producer Jeff Barry (Sugar Sugar Honey Honey, The Monkees, I Honestly Love You for Olivia Newton John) to produce the album Look At Me Now on Utopia. RCA/Utopia released it in the summer of 1976. The album was never a chart maker but has become an underground and internet favorite throughout the world.
There have been 30 years since The Buckeye Politicians recorded, but we have aged like fine wine and have put a lifetime of hard living and loving into the music on this new CD called HERE I AM on The Rainbow Collection Label. It reintroduces the past and future fans to what it is like to listen to honest songs with passion and melody. You will dance and sing with The Buckeye Politicians and when you get to the last song on the 14 song HERE I AM CD, you will be ready to start the journey all over again.
The members of the group have changed; there are only 2 members from the original group the brothers Jay Almon (Bass, Vocals) and LA Almon (Guitar, Vocals). Joining the Almon brothers are Jays daughter Conia Almon (Vocals), Tharon Johnson (Keyboards), Dave Nilo (Keyboards), Mark Henderson (Percussion) and Kris Keith (Flute, Tenor and Soprano Sax).
If you have been a follower of The Buckeye Politicians over our musical career you will love the new music you hear on our new CD HERE I AM.
Honest and from the heart music to uall
