"In her compositions, Emily is capable of gathering, in a truly spontaneous way, elements derived from her Classical upbringing, together with those coming from the ethnic people she has lived with."

"It's the cello though that ties everything together
and makes this whole album impossible to ignore...Still, if you need to escape into music that is deep, thoughtful and also lifts your spirits then look no further than Emily Burridge. 100%.

"Footsteps in the Sand" encapsulates creative developments born out of a deepening relationship with both the people and the natural environment of Brazil.
Recorded in studios in Brazil, Austria and England and features musicians from all these countries including the renowned guitarist and producer Gandalf from Austria.
"Footsteps in the Sand" evolved from the personal experiences of Emily when she was living on the North East coast of Brazil. Seeking out tradition and armed with her portable digital recorder, she travelled on local buses to isolated places and visited rural communities. She recorded both groups and individuals singing songs and chants. From these people she discovered a folk-loric world, rich in musical diversity.
Reflecting the mythical traditions the lyrics of the second track "Candle in the Sand" is about Yemaja (Godess of the Sea) festivities:
We sat and watched,
The Sea drew the line
Cool waters, memories in time.
The shifting sands, like an hour glass,
How quickly this time has passed.
We tossed a flower in to the sea
We lit a candle in the sand,
The flame that burned, still speaks to me
Brings memories of that land
In one place, which the locals referred to as the "end of the line" she encountered the Tremembe Indians who lived in the sand dunes set back from the sea. The Chief and his daughter decided to sing some of their traditional songs. Emily recorded them and three of the Tremembe songs form the base for her tracks "Rainmaker", "Agua de Menina" and "Prayer for the Fishermen". These tracks are an audible response to her experience with the Tremembe Indians and the isolated place in which they live.
British born 'cellist, singer and composer Emily Burridge's solo productions during the last twelve years have had their roots in her experiences of living in Brazil.
She started playing the 'cello at the age of five and was awarded scholarships to study at specialist music school (Wells Cathedral) and the Royal College of Music London. Commencing her career her ability to improvise on the 'cello expanded her horizons as a 'cellist. You will see Emily's name on numerous CDs as a featured 'cellist and within string sections including artists George Michael, Stereophonics, Gianna Nannini to name but a few.. With the Austrian producer and guitarist Gandalf she sings and plays the 'cello on Barakaya, Gates to Secret Realities and latest release "Somewhere between Earth and Sky".
She has a current duo with pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole.
