BIG BEAR LAKE- its a first of a Big Bear band! Jazz band CATZ in the HATZ went big-time, Saturday night (7-8-6) when they signed a recording contract with RHOMBUS RECORDS. No other musical group from Big Bear has landed a recording contract. At a celebrity-like celebration surrounded by exuberant fans at the Mandoline Bistro, the jazz five signed on with the recording company of Hollywood.

Signing on with renowned Rhombus is a real advantage, as the bands music coincides with a national jazz radio campaign with the latest hits. CATZ in the HATZ continue to get digital download hits from around the world. CATZ are in the top ten in several European countries.

This summer the popular group has entertained at local hot spots such as the Music in the Mountains, Saturday afternoon concert at Veterans Park. Steve Johnsons God Blessed America was heard during the KBHRs patriotic extravaganza on July 4th. The jazz group will be opening for the Pointer Sisters at the Discovery Centers Gala, Saturday July 29th. KTLA's Ross King will feature CATZ in the HATZ on the10:00 p.m. news on July 27th, Thursday and Friday, before the annual event.

Resilience Mike Foley says, These are seasoned musicians who love the music and know how to have fun with it. The five CATZ are Lead Guitarist Mike Weins, Bass Guitarist Terry Copley, and keyboard by Mike Cross, Singer & Percussionist Steve Johnson, and Drummer & Vocals Steve Boggio, all residents of the valley.

Mandoline's Bistro owner, Larry Cummings a great supporter of CATZ IN THE HATZ, invites everyone to enjoy the village venue on July and August Saturday nights. Great news for a local band. CATZ IN THE HATZ has signed with Rhombus Records in Hollywood. The jazz band continues to get airplay around the world and is reportedly in the top ten in several countries. Locally, they're opening for the Pointer Sisters at the Big Bear Discovery Center Gala on July 29, and they'll be featured on KTLA's 10pm news program the Thursday and Friday before the event. The local group also recorded special patriotic music that was heard on KBHR's July 4th program during the fireworks display. You can see them on a regular basis at the Mandoline Bistro in the Village.

The hub-bub of this small town band is like peaks and valleys. in some


circles outside the confines of big bear lake caLifornia, the catz are known as the NEW direction of otherwise traditional jazz and in other circles in their own hometown people ask who they are. Some have never heard of them and then again...some have. The big question is does it qualify as mainstream or fusion? The answer is not an easy one for the 5 guys that DO have day jobs. Over the past year since the release of the locally and internet/commercial introduction of the catz in the hatz on a global level with their "take one" album ( a collection of club fav's that are still available at cdbaby), the catz have come very far as musicians and writters. this new album "take two" labled as the " counterpart " of "take one" is anything but. This album really captures the rock and roll foundation of this transformed band for most of its members and unlike the first,this album features more instrumentals than vocals proving that they are talented in both modes. From the swinging and comical SLOW DOWN JIMMY to GOD BLESSED AMERICA ( which could very well end up being the NEW americana tune of the new generation), this album is a delight for musicians and listeners. LOVER which is a jazz standard really shows the hyper-intensity if this group of five and features lighting fast guitar and a bass solo that is not heard of in the jazz realm.RIVIERA PARADISE (a stevie ray song) is done in a very haunting fashion and is well worth the 8 mins of song. FUIR ELISE is also another composition that is unheard of in the jazz realm. This song shows the imagination of pianist mike cross and an un-mistakable prelude of scarbouogh affair played on the fretless bass by terry copley...interesting though and with its swirling violins and tubular bells, they make this song a wonderfull marriage of clasical,jazz and rock. Steve boggio holds all this mania together with his un-stoppable timing,flare and style.Mike weins and his guitar are master and slave that any aspiring guitarist and even some big shots..could take a lesson from and then there's steve johnson and with only a few in the heavyweight class of male baritone jazz, johnson proves to be a contender.Terry copley has the bass duties in this band and does a fine job as a rocker tuned jazzer. his solos are unique if not downright STRANGE but this is what gives the catz their sound and a pleasent sound it is. So all in all, i think this album is the answer or part of the answer to what can not just baby boomers...but kids and elderly alike can listen to in a world of repetitive music.Its no wonder that the catz have opened for both 3 DOG NIGHT and AMERICA because sometimes 15 mins of fame can happen to the un-discovered artist. the catz are about 5 mins into it.

This album was produced differently from the first and captures the true sounds and energy of this band. This song is being released as a single from the Catz in the Hat second album. It is also worth mentioning that Fur Elise scored the number 1, 3, and 6 slots for the months of November and December of 2005 at 104.7 fm in Los Angeles.

For those of you who don't like reading reviews all the way through, I'll start off with the bottom line: You've got to hear this band.

Why? Quite simply because The Catz in the Hatz are the best thing to happen to jazz in the last two years.

Do I have your attention? Good - because this band blows the socks off 99 percent of what passes for jazz these days. And I'll say it again - you've got to hear them. Firmly rooted in straight-ahead, traditional jazz, the Catz aren't afraid to explore the relaxing groove that has fueled the jazz resurgence. And when they cook ... look Out. They like nothing better than turning jazz into an all-out party. No wonder they've been the toast of Big Bear for the last year and have often been called "the best kept jazz secret in Southern California."

That's all about to change. This bright spot on the jazz scene has released its first album, Resilience, a collection of jazz. standards that combines sizzling instrumentals with the best of the Great American Songbook. leading the charge is front man Steve Johnson, whose smooth baritone could easily share the stage with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole or Tony Bennett. It's the kind of voice tailor made for jazz at its lights-low romantic best and Johnson wrings every ounce out of such songs as Sinatra's 'One For My Baby," "Angel Eyes," and the classic "It Was a Very Good Year."

Johnson, in fact, learned Sinatra-style phrasing as a young boy, singing with his father in the family living room. And it has paid off handsomely. His voice can easily explore the romance in a song while maintaining the kind of edge that makes him a rarity-a jazz singer who can make a song his own.

But the fun doesn't stop there. The Catz aren't simply a phone-it-in backup band. These are seasoned musicians who love the music and know how to have fun with it. Guitarist Mike Wiens is often so smooth he makes jazz look deceptively easy. With a style that recalls Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery, Wiens can produce jaw-dropping solos that leave audiences screaming. Mike Cross, whose keyboards first fleshed out the Catz sound a year ago, is a 40-year piano veteran whose confidence and improvisation have inspired audiences and visiting musicians alike. Cross's solos easily bridge the straight-ahead sounds of Barry Harris and Jon Mayer with the more fun-loving approach of smooth jazz's David Benoit. It's a strong, self-assured approach that's always fresh and challenging.

The Catz in the Hatz also feature a dynamic rhythm section, featuring drummer Steve Boggio, whose solid timing and innovative solos make him an audience favorite. And bassist Terry Copley isn't a hang-out-in-the-corner bass player. He's all over the stage in live gigs, delivering solos with an originality, power and machine-gun energy reminiscent of the late Jaco Pastorius of Weather Report fame. Copley can also deliver on the quieter tunes, complimenting Johnson's dreamy vocals with a bass solo on "My Funny Valentine."

Add these elements up and you get some of the best cuts on this CD - Peggy Lee's "Fever," Mel Torme's "I'm Coming Home," Duke Ellington's "Lucky So and So," and what may be the best song on the album, Nat Cole's "Nature Boy," where Johnson's scatting is surrounded by seamless solos from the other band members. And if you want to see Beethoven sit up and take notice, check out Cross's arrangement of "Fur Elise," the best classical/jazz mix since Eddie Daniels.

As jazz rushes back into the mainstream, its retro stylings have found a home with fans of Harry Connick, Jr. and Diana Krall. But now things have taken a new turn with the Catz in the Hatz, a band that's putting the energy and style back into America's music.
