Description
Charles Wells calls himself primarily a soul singer, but his vast repertoire includes "everything from Sinatra to Motown." While leading a number of musicians' ensembles, Charles established credentials that include performances at The Muny, Powell Symphony Hall, the Edward Jones Dome, as well as country clubs and casinos all over the Midwest, and as far removed as Arizona. He has also shared a stage with luminaries such as The Supremes' Mary Wilson and rising star Michael Buble.
Born in St. Louis Missouri, Charles started singing in his Uncles church at age four, and toured up and down the Mississippi River with the West Side Missionary Baptist Church Choir and says Music has never left my heart or vocation. During his teens Charles was influenced by the sounds coming off his radio -- 60s and 70s R&B, Blues, Jazz, and Rock & Roll music that would influence the next part of his musical journey.
Charles Wells first group was called WE FRIENDS. The band entered the Talent Show contest at the Forest Park Community College performing an original composition co-written with member Rodney (Chase) Ruffin. As Charles recollects "We knew that you had to write your own tunes, so while other artists were doing cover material, we were developing our own sound!
Wells also studied at UMSL as a voice major and has been in countless singing groups and bands including Music Box, a seven-piece variety dance band that is well known in the Midwest.
In 2006 Charles Wells recorded his debut CD titled "It's My Turn." produced by Gary (Brotherman) Branchaud. Branchaud called on veteran keyboardist, Johnny Neel, to help drive the groove home. Wells delivers a sound that combines the soulful renderings of Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Sam & Dave with the great R&B Motown Sound of The Temptations and Marvin Gaye along with the Pop and Rock style of Bob Segar, Michael McDonald, Lionel Richie and Huey Lewis. Its My Turn was recorded at Johnny Neel's studio, Straight-Up Sound in Nashville and will be released in early 2006 on Booyah Records.
